
Kelley Hartley Hutton Becomes Wins Leader as Mastodons Take Invite Title

Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW head coach Kelley Hartley Hutton became the winningest coach in IPFW women's volleyball history, as her Mastodons took the team title at the 2010 IPFW Invitational with a 3-1 final-match win over the Milwaukee Panthers (15-25, 25-20,2 5-19, 25-22).
Tournament MVP Maya Schlindwein finished the final match of the invitational with a match-high 17 kills, while Taryn Parker had 14. Tessa McGill, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team along with Parker, had a match-high 31 digs, good for the ninth most in a match in IPFW volleyball history, while Stephanie Lamberti had a career-high four service aces.
With the victory, Hartley Hutton wins her 231st match, putting her one ahead of former record holder, and current men's volleyball coach Arnie Ball, who ended his eight-year career coaching the women with 229 victories.
Milwaukee came out firing from the gate, scoring six of the first seven points of the match, and lead by six at 9-3 before the Mastodons scored three straight to cut the deficit to three at 9-6. A quick 3-0 answer by the Panthers was followed by a 7-0 streak by IPFW, which gave the 'Dons their first lead since 1-0.
The teams traded points back-and-forth with the Mastodons leading 15-4 before Milwaukee went on a hot streak, scoring the final 11 points of the set to cruise to the 25-15 opening set win.
The second set saw the Mastodons jump ahead 5-2, and never look back, trailing just once in the set. The Panthers used a 4-0 run to take to a 13-12 lead halfway through the frame, before the Mastodons answered with a 7-0 run, highlighted by four straight Schlindwein points, two on solo blocks and two more on kills, taking IPFW ahead 19-13.
Milwaukee would only get to within two the rest of the set, as the Mastodons capped the frame with a 3-0 run on a pair of Lamberti kills and a Parker/Steenhuysen combo block.
The third set was a tightly contest back-and-forth affair, with the teams trading sideouts and 2-0 runs before the Panthers ran off three straight points to turn a 13-11 deficit into a 14-13 lead. A 4-1 Mastodon run helped the hosts re-take the lead, before a quick 2-0 Milwaukee run knotted the match at 17 apiece. IPFW followed with runs of 4-0 and 3-0 sandwiched between a Kerri Schuh kill put the 'Dons firmly ahead at 24-18, as the teams traded sideouts to end the set, a 25-19 Mastodon win.
Milwaukee came out in the fourth set firing on all cylinders, jumping ahead to a four-point lead at 13-9, forcing Hartley Hutton to use her first timeout of the set. The Mastodons responded with three straight points to cut the deficit to one, and then used a pair of 3-0 runs sandwiched between a Milwaukee timeout and a Rachel Neuberger kill, to put IPFW ahead 19-16.
Milwaukee would chip away at the Mastodon lead, climbing to within as few as one at 23-22, but a service error and an attack error helped IPFW claim the four-set victory.
Megan Steenhuysen dished out 38 assists over the four sets, with Jen Milligan reaching double figure digs for the second straight match with 11. Parker had a match-high six blocks, as Alli Hook and Schlindwein each had five for the victors.
All-Tournament Team members Kerri Schuh and Jenna Berg reached double digits for Milwaukee, while Berg also had a team-high 18 digs. Also named to the All-Tournament team was Tulsa's Tyler Henderson and Saint Louis' Megan Boken.
The Mastodons take to the road for their first road match of the 2010 season when they go north to Western Michigan University, to take on the Broncos at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with first-serve slated for 7:00 PM.
