Indianapolis, IN - A high-powered Butler Bulldog offense poured in goals early and often, as the 2009 Horizon League Champs defeated the Mastodons 4-0 in the regular season opener.
The Bulldog scoring attack began in the game's 10th minute as Julian Cardona followed a shot by Ben Sippola, beating the IPFW keeper near side.
Butler would continue to put the heat on the 'Dons with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the half as Austin Oldham's shot from seven yards out found the back of the net. Sippola was credited with assist number two on the night along with Blake Leyden. Leyden would add his second assist of the night with just six seconds remaining the opening frame, Matt Hedges followed his shot, beating the keeper off of the rebound, leaving the IPFW defense deflated heading to the halftime locker room.
The second half would continue in much the same fashion as the Bulldogs continued to dominated the offensive pace of the match. In all, the Bulldogs would out-shoot the Mastodons 22-9 in the match.
Kyle Pateros put the finishing touch on the scoreboard when he lit the lamp with a header off of a perfectly placed corner kick from teammate Jared Isenthal.
Senior forward Casey Bowman led the IPFW offense with two shots, both on goal. Senior keeper Donovan Dowling led the defense with seven saves on 11 total shots on goal faced.
IPFW falls to 0-1 after the season-opening loss and will continue their road swing Friday in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Dayton, Ohio. The Mastodons' match with the host Flyers will kick-off Friday night (Sept. 3) at 7:30 p.m. The 'Dons will also face-off with the Wright State Raiders in a Sunday (Sept. 5) afternoon matchup at 2 p.m.
