Dayton, OH - After a thrilling IPFW goal in the final five minutes of regulation, the Dayton Flyers found the back of the net in overtime, downing the Mastodons 2-1 in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Dayton.
After a slow-starting opening half of action that saw just 11 shots between the two sides, Dayton's Evan McCreary got the second half scoring started just eight minutes into the period.
He took a pass from teammate Ryan Bauer at the top of the box and fired a laser over the head of IPFW keeper Donovan Dowling for the first goal of the game.
After nearly 30 minutes of lull from the IPFW side, Max Touloute landed the game-tying score. He fired a shot from 18 yards out, tucking the shot into the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
The final five minutes of the clock ticked away, sending the neck-and-neck match to extended time.
IPFW had a great scoring opportunity in the second minute of bonus time as Touloute took the corner. Rough play in the box nixed the scoring chance and the IPFW attack fell to the wayside.
The gamebreaker came in the 96th minute of action off of a Flyer corner kick. Bauer again sent a kick into the box and Andres Acedvedo settled underneath of it, pushing the header past the IPFW keeper for his second tally and the game sealing goal.
Touloute led the 'Dons with seven total shots as the two sides each took 17 total shots. Dowling posted seven saves overall in the match.
IPFW returns to action Sunday (Sept. 5) in the second match of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic against the Wright State Raiders. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
