Mastodons Break Stalemate in 96th Minute for 1-0 Win

Fort Wayne, IN - It took over 95 minutes and more than 30 shots from the two sides, but in the end the IPFW Mastodons came out victorious, downing the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 1-0.
The first half of action saw a combined 15 shots, with neither side able to break through in the opening frame. Mastodon forward Max Touloute was stuffed twice at point-blank range as part of an IPFW offense that controlled possession for much of the half.
The second half was much of the same ballgame.
IPFW saw their best opportunity of the match stopped at the goal line by a Panther defender. A free kick from midfielder Jorge Ramirez reached the diving head of forward Andy Masteller from six yards out. His shot made it past the keeper, but an Eastern defender was there to make a miraculous sliding stop to keep the clean sheet in tact.
The Panthers had a near miss of their own just minutes later. EIU midfielder Ian McCausland dribbled to within 10 yards of the net on the right corner and fired a blast at a charging Donovan Dowling. Dowling took the shot to the chest, making the game-saving stand.
The final seconds ticked off of regulation as the two sides were headed to extra play.
Six minutes into extra time, the IPFW prayers were answered. The solid offensive pressure throughout the game would finally pay off.
Masteller fired a shot from six yards out that deflected off the keepers hands and to the left side of the box. IPFW sophomore Mitch Falkenstern followed up with a blast of his own from just three yards out directly into the back of the goal.
The IPFW sideline emptied onto the field to celebrate their first victory of the young season.
Touloute led the IPFW charge with seven total shots, while Dowling posted four saves en route to the shutout victory.
With the win, IPFW moves to 1-3 overall. They will return to action Sunday as they travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Western Michigan Broncos.
