Fort Wayne, IN - A first half goal from senior Andy Masteller was all the Mastodons needed, as the defense held on for a 1-0 shutout victory over the UW-Milwaukee Panthers.
In the 32nd minute of an opening half that saw the 'Dons dominate possession, senior forward Jorge Ramirez dribbled a ball deep into Panther territory. From the right wing, Ramirez sent a perfectly arching ball into the box where the towering Masteller awaited - pushing it past the Milwaukee keeper with a solid header.
Masteller's score is his second of the year.
The Mastodons continued to control possession throughout the remainder of the half, a period in which they outshot Milwaukee 8-7.
As the Panther offense pushed the offensive pressure in the second frame, it was IPFW keeper Donovan Dowling and the defense that stood strong. In all, Dowling posted five saves en route to his second shutout of the season.
The IPFW offense was led by five different players, with two shots a piece while a pair of Panthers each took four of their team's 17 attempts.
With the win, IPFW moves to 2-4 overall with the conference slate looming in October. The 'Dons return to action this weekend for a pair of road non-conference matches, Friday (Sept. 17) at Saint Francis (Pa.) and Sunday at Cleveland State (Sept. 19).
