CONWAY, Ark. – A strong defensive effort, along with a header from freshman Myles Stanley late in the second half provided IPFW its third road win of the 2011 season on Sunday afternoon, as the Mastodons outlasted Central Arkansas, 1-0 in Conway, Ark.
IPFW finishes the weekend 2-0, improving its 2011 record 5-6-1 (1-0-0). Central Arkansas drops to 1-5-1 with the loss.
After an aggressive, but scoreless first half, where the game featured 10 combined shots, the Mastodons returned to field looking for more offensive production from its frontline. IPFW's early push was unsuccessful, however, as the squad struggled to create open looks. On the opposite sideline, the Bears stepped up their up-tempo attack, firing a pair of quick attempts. Despite the push, the Mastodon defense held its ground, forcing Central Arkansas to launch off-balanced shots.
As the teams traded possessions into the game's final minutes, IPFW made one final push to bring home the victory. With a single textbook play, their efforts paid off.
In the 80th minute, senior Colin Helmrich sailed a corner-kick into the Bear box to a waiting Stanley, who found a seam in the crowd, then directed a header into the back of the net, giving IPFW a 1-0 lead.
Late comeback attempts from Central Arkansas were met by a tough 'Don defensive presence, as the Mastodons held onto the one-goal lead as time expired.
Stanley's first-career goal was the difference-marker, as the team fired 10 shots on Sunday. Alex Stronczek, Max Touloute and Liridon Qafleshi led the Mastodons with two shots each. Brandon Cloutier played well in goal for IPFW, recording three saves in his first-career shutout.
IPFW returns to action and Summit League play on Oct. 8, when they welcome Western Illinois to Hefner Stadium. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST.
