BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Three Mastodons recorded double-digit point totals, but it wasn't enough to slow down a quick and aggressive Hampton backcourt, as the Pirates moved past IPFW 79-62 at the Gates Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Stephanie Rosado led the Mastodons with a season-high 20 points, hitting 12 of 14 attempts from the foul line. Erin Murphy scored 18 points, while Anne Boese totaled 13. Pirate Choicetta McMillen drained a career-high 29 points in the win.
IPFW opened the game strong as Murphy scored the game's first points with a mid-range jumper to put the home team ahead 2-0. With 11:44 left in the first half, Boese pushed the lead to four at 20-16 after peeling off a screen and hitting a wide-open three-pointer from the left corner.
Led by McMillian, the Pirates found their offensive rhythm midway through the opening half and took the lead at 23-22, before finishing the period on a 24-8 run to move comfortably on top 47-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Mastodons began chipping away at the Hampton advantage, trailing by 12 at 60-48 with 10:48 left in the contest. Rosado paced the comeback charge with back-to-back field goals and four free throws in the seven-minute stretch.
Unfortunately for the 'Dons, Hampton continued to feed-off McMillen and teammate Keiara Avant late in the game, as the duo found open shots in and around the basket. One final McMillen three-pointer with a little over a minute remaining cemented a 79-62 Hampton road win.
The Mastodons shot 37% from the floor (17-46) and 73% (25-34) from the charity stripe. The 'Dons committed 20 turnovers, while forcing 13.
IPFW returns to action on Dec. 1 when they welcome South Dakota to the Memorial Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm EST.
