Jackrabbits Push Past Mastodons in Brookings

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State Jackrabbits out-scored IPFW 48-21 in the second half, running away with a 94-58 Summit League win on Wednesday evening at Frost Arena.
The loss drops IPFW to 7-5 on the season, and 1-2 in the Summit League, while South Dakota State improves to 11-4 and a perfect 3-0 in league play.
Frank Gaines scored a team-high 15 points for the Mastodons, while Trey McCorkle scored 12, and Justin Jordan 10. Antwaun Boyd narrowly missed double-figures with eight, as John Peckinpaugh chipped in a half-dozen.
McCorkle had a team-best six rebounds for IPFW, with Gaines adding five for IPFW, who was out-rebounded by a 45-31 margin in the contest.
The Mastodons and Jackrabbits battled back and forth early in the game, with the Mastodons leading for the majority of the first five minutes of the game, leading by as many as four when Antwaun Boyd drilled a mid-range jumper with 16:21, giving IPFW a 10-6 lead.
Trailing by two at 13-11 with 15:02 to play SDSU opened a 10-1 run, ended when Jordan hit a three-pointer with 11:38 to play in the half.
The IPFW deficit reached double digits with 9:25 to play; however, the Mastodons closed to within five three times, the latest at 39-34.
The host Jackrabbits ended the half on a 7-3 run, with the three IPFW points coming when senior forward John Peckinpaugh drained a three-point basket with three seconds left in the frame, sending the 'Dons into the locker room in a 46-37 hole.
In the second half the 'Dons closed to within eight at 48-40 with 18:23 to play in the period, before the 'Jacks used a 27-8 run to pull away to a 27-point lead with 11:02 to play in the game.
South Dakota State kept its foot on the gas pedal, pushing the lead to as many as 36, including the final margin of the game.
IPFW made just 21-of-57 shots from the field (36.8 percent) and 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from long range and 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) from the charity stripe. The 'Jacks made 53.8 percent (35-of-65) of their shots from the field, and 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) from long range in the SDSU win.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, December 30, when the squad travels to Fargo, North Dakota, to take on the Bison of North Dakota State, who toppled Oakland University tonight by a 96-69 score at the Bison Sports Arena. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
