Edwardsville, IL - IPFW senior Jordan Zuppe became the program's career-leader in three-point field goals made, with 242, as the Mastodons fell to a feisty SIU Edwardsville Cougar squad by a 72-61 score.
Zuppe, with her second of three three-point field goals in the game, passed Amy Gearlds (239/2000-04) into the top spot in the career category, now with 241, which is also the third highest career total in Summit League history.
Chelsey Jackson scored a game-high 18 points, while Zuppe added 14 and Sydney Weinert a season-high 13 points. Erin Murphy narrowly missed the double-figure plateau with nine points off of the bench in the loss. Stephanie Rosado and Jackson each pulled down six rebounds, while Jackson dished out a game-high six assists.
IPFW showed its tired legs, which has racked up over 1,500 miles on a bus in a little over a week and a half, as the Cougars came out with intensity, and turned an IPFW three-point lead with 16:44 remaining in the first half, into a five-point deficit four minutes later.
The Mastodons were able to re-take the lead with a pair of Jackson free throws with 7:59 to play in the opening half, before the Cougars rattled off eight consecutive points, taking a lead that the hosts would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
The first half IPFW deficit grew to as many as 12, as the Cougars took a 37-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A 15-4 run to open the second half pushed the margin to 23, the highest in the game, before the Mastodons started chipping away at the deficit, but could only cut the SIUE lead to single digits once the rest of the way, as the final margin was 11 at 72-61.
IPFW, who had hit over half of its shots in each of the last four games, made just 32.8 percent of its shots, the lowest shooting percentage since December 6, while SIUE converted on 29-of-56 shots (51.8 percent), and out-scored IPFW 46-26 in the paint for the game.
Michaela Herrod led five Cougars in double-figure scoring with 16 points, while Sydney Stahlberg had 11 points and a career-high-tying 15 rebounds, while also dishing out four assists and picking up four steals.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, February 19 when the team returns to conference action with a 1:30 contest against the Bison of North Dakota State in the school's "Pink Out" game, where fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game, and all donations and $1 from every ticket sold will go to helping to raise awareness and find a cure for breast cancer.
