Kansas City, MO - The UMKC Kangaroos took the lead with 8:18 remaining in the first half, and never trailed again, despite six tie scores in the second half, with the Mastodons falling in the Summit League game 80-71 at the Swinney Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Anne Boese scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 6-of-8 from long range, while Stephanie Rosado added 19 and Sydney Weinert and Chelsey Jackson each finished with 10. Jordan Zuppe dished out five assists, while Weinert pulled down nine rebounds to pace the squad, while Rosado had eight.
Rosado added three blocked shots, giving her 46 for the season, two away from the single-season school record, and 85 over her career, moving her to second place in the career category at IPFW.
IPFW (18-9, 12-5 Summit League) jumped out quickly, scoring eight of the first ten points en route to an 8-2 lead 2:45 into the contest. UMKC fought back, closing the gap and tying the score at 11 apiece.
The Mastodon lead grew to four once again after a jumper in the paint by Weinert, giving IPFW a 21-19 lead; however, UMKC would score the next six points to lead by one at 24-23. Boese hit her second three-pointer of the game to push IPFW ahead once again at 24-23, but that would be IPFW's last lead of the game, as UMKC ran off a 7-2 run to lead by four, and increased that gap to six at 36-30 heading into the locker room at halftime.
UMKC (14-14, 9-8 Summit) scored first out of the break to push its lead to eight, before IPFW fought back behind a strong full-court defense to go on a 10-2 run, tying the game at 40 apiece with 16:40 remaining on the clock.
There would be five more tie scores the rest of the way, but IPFW could not climb out of the early deficit to lead again. The game was tied for the final time at 66 with 4:44 to play in the contest, and IPFW trailed by one with 2:13 to play; however, the Kangaroos iced the game by making 10-of-10 chances at the charity stripe, and their last 20 overall free throw attempts in the game, giving the game an 80-71 final margin.
UMKC made 22-of-24 shots from the free throw line for the game, tied for the 11th best opponent free throw percentage in IPFW women's basketball history. Eilise O'Connor scored a game-high 22 points, while Kaycie Boyles added 21 and 10 rebounds in the winning effort for the Kangaroos.
IPFW made 27-of-62 shots from the field, and 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from long range, but was out-scored 22-to-7 from the free throw line, and out-rebounded 37-to-32.
The Mastodons return to action on Monday, February 28, in the regular season finale, as the team faces off against the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University with tip-off slated for 9:00 PM EST.
