Reid's Complete Game Leads Aggies Past IPFW in Series Opener

Las Crusas, NM - New Mexico State starter Dan Reid tossed a complete game six-hitter as the Aggies took Game 1 of a four-game set with IPFW, 11-2 on Friday night at Presly Askew Field on the campus of NMSU.
Reid overcame four Aggie miscues in the field to earn his fourth victory of the season against zero defeats. The two runs he issued to the Mastodons were unearned.
Reid's Aggie teammates staked him to an early 3-0 after one inning. Designated hitter Ryan Laing got State rolling with a two-run homer off of IPFW starter Nick Optiz.
NMSU (12-5) added another in the bottom of the third before IPFW would crack the scoring column in the top of the fourth.
Senior center fielder Kurt Dudley would reach on an infield error and eventually score on an RBI single by senior DH Brett Clark.
The Aggies added a pair in the 5th inning and a single run in the 6th to take a 7-1 lead.
IPFW would get what proved to be their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Clark reached on another infield error and would cross the plate with two out in the inning on a wild pitch.
However, that is as close as the 'Dons would get. New Mexico State added one in the bottom of the seventh and got three in the home half of the 8th inning on a bases-clearing double from second baseman Parker Hipp to coast to the 11-2 win.
Optiz was saddled with the loss for IPFW (1-2). He gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 2-7. Games 2 and 3 of the series will be on Saturday even. The twinbill at Askew Field begins at 5:00 p.m.
