Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW senior Kurt Dudley drove in two runs in the opening game of the team's doubleheader against Milwaukee, before successfully completing a straight steal of home plate in the fourth inning of the day finale, which was suspended because of darkness after 10 innings.
The Mastodons (3-11 overall) won the opener 5-4 behind an eighth-inning RBI from Garret Segraves, and the teams were tied at one through 10 innings in the nightcap, before seeing the game suspended because of darkness. The teams will resume the suspended game at noon tomorrow, with the regularly scheduled nine-inning game against the two teams to follow.
The opening game saw Segraves and Dudley each go 2-for-4 at the plate, with Dudley driving in two, and Segraves one. Each of the team's five runs came from different baserunners, as Matt Ransbottom picked up his first win on the mound this season, improving to 1-1 on the year after pitching the final three and a third inning in the game.
IPFW staked itself to a 4-0 lead after back-to-back two-run innings in the second and third frames, the first pair coming on a Kristian Gayday single that scored Brett Clark, before Cody Galbraith scored on a wild pitch a batter later. In the third, Dudley doubled home Will Faulkner and Segraves, giving the 'Dons a 4-0 advantage.
The Panthers cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, and eventually tied the score with a run in the top of the sixth inning, setting the stage for Segraves' game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Milwaukee reached the scoreboard first in the nightcap, which was scheduled to be just a seven-inning game, when Sam Sivilotti hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Doug Dekoning, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead through two innings.
An inning and a half later when Dudley reached on a fielder's choice, was pushed to second on a single by A.J. Christensen, and moved to third on a walk by Cody Galbraith before converting the steal of home plate, knotting the score at one apiece. The next six innings went by without a score before the umpires suspended the game after the 10th inning.
