Fullerton, CA - In the opening day of the prestigious DeMarini Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton, the Mastodons fell to 10th ranked California 18-8 in the opening game of the tournament for IPFW, before falling 2-0 to host Cal State Fullerton in the evening nightcap.
In the opener, the nationally ranked Golden Bears jumped out early, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning, including a bases-loaded triple from Elia Reid, pushing the Bears to a 7-0 advantage.
Another run in the top of the second inning, and four more in the top of the third to lead 12-0 through three innings.
The Mastodon offense awoke in the third inning, when IPFW picked up back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out in the frame. Courtney Cronin followed with a single up the middle, scoring Brittany Kachur and Sara Jacobson, before Kristen Rohn also singled up the middle, chasing home Kristina Karpun, who a week earlier became the program's all-time RBI leader.
California added two runs in the top of the fourth inning, before the Mastodons got a run via a solo home run to right field from Rachel Staschuk. Four more runs put California ahead by 14 at 18-4, with IPFW needing seven runs to keep the game from being run-rule shortened.
Needing seven runs, IPFW came through with four, starting with a single by Ashleigh Bousquet, a walk to Alex Bousquet, and a walk by Audrey Mintari to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Sara Hopwood followed by hitting a deep fly ball to right field, scoring the first Bousquet, before the second Bousquet was driven home by a single from Staschuk. Kachur drove in Mintari with a groundout to the pitcher, before Karpun, doubled to left-center field, bringing home Staschuk, the final run scored of the game.
Staschuk was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and driven in, while Karpun and Ashleigh Bousquet were each 2-for-3. Staschuk and Cronin each drove in a pair, as Staschuk was the only player with multiple runs scored.
Staschuk picked up the loss in the circle, dropping her season record to 1-1, giving up eight runs, seven earned, over an inning of work, striking out two. Megan Flenniken pitched four innings of relief, giving up nine earned runs while striking out a pair.
The second game opened much differently than the opening score-fest, as neither team could find its offensive rhythm early in the contest. Fullerton threatened in the bottom of the third inning, putting runners on second and third with one out, however an alert Alex Bousquet took the ground ball hit to her, throwing to Karpun at the plate, to tag out the eventual leading run, and keeping the game scoreless through three complete innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Titans finally pushed a run across the plate, when K.C. Craddick led off the inning with a walk, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Eliza Crawford followed with a single to the shortstop, and was thrown out at second base as Jena Rubio, a pinch-runner, scored from second on the play, the first run given up by Cronin this season.
The Titans chased another run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single up the middle by Crawford, chasing home Rubio for the final run of the contest.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-3 for IPFW, as Staschuk had the team's only other hit in the ballgame. Cronin went the full six innings, giving up two runs and and striking out three while walking three as well.
The Mastodons return to action tomorrow, when the team faces off against UC Santa Barbara and Iowa in the second day of the DeMarini Invitational.
