Fullerton, CA - In its 2011 DeMarini Invitational final game, the IPFW Mastodons fell to the Northwestern Wildcats by an 8-1 score on Sunday afternoon.

Cassie Wolfe and Sarah Swanson each had two hits for the Mastodons, as junior pitcher Courtney Cronin fell to 5-2 on the season in picking up the loss in the contest.

The Wildcats scored three runs in both the top of the first and top of the second innings, staking the visitors on the scoreboard to a 6-0 lead. IPFW countered with a run in the bottom of the second when Swanson scored on a Wildcat fielding error off the bat of Sara Hopwood.

The next three innings were scoreless for each team, before the Big Ten squad pushed one run across the plate in the top of the seventh inning to give the game its 8-1 final score.

Cronin pitched the first inning and a third, allowing six runs while striking out one and walking two. Rachel Staschuk pitched the final five and two-thirds of an inning, striking out six, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run.

The Mastodons remain in California, and will face off against Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, March 9 with first pitch set for 5:00 PM EST.
