BOX SCORE
Macomb, IL - The 2011 softball season came to a close for the IPFW Mastodons, as the UMKC Kangaroos took advantage of four IPFW errors en route to a 5-2 victory at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium on the campus of Western Illinois University.
IPFW had five hits in 25 at-bats, including a solo home run from Ashleigh Bousquet and a sacrifice fly from Sara Hopwood, as starting pitcher Megan Flenniken went five innings without allowing an earned run, striking out eight while scattering five hits.
Each team was scoreless through the first three innings of the game, with Flenniken holding the Kangaroos hitless through the same span. The first hit for UMKC came when Anna Sokolik led off the fourth inning with an infield single, and a sacrifice bunt moved her along to second base. A fielding error by the IPFW second baseman put runners on the corners, before a strikeout put the Mastodons one out away from getting out of trouble. UMKC put together back-to-back hits, however, to score three unearned runs and give the visitors on the scoreboard a 3-0 lead.
The Mastodons answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bousquet led off the inning with a solo home run to right-center field, her fifth home run of the season, cutting the deficit to two at 3-1, as IPFW put runners at first and second, but a fielder's choice groundout to second base ended the threat.
Two more unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the deficit at four at 5-1, before IPFW got a back-to-back one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases, before Hopwood's sacrifice fly scored Rachel Staschuk at third base. The three-run margin would stay, however, as Kristina Karpun's hard-hit line drive was snagged by UMKC third baseman Megan Ussary.
After the seven runs over the two innings, neither team would score again, as each team's sixth and seventh innings saw six-up, six-down, securing the win for the 'Roos.
Staschuk went 2-for-4 to lead the Mastodons, as Ashleigh Bousquet was 1-for-2, Sarah Swanson 1-for-3, and Alex Bousquet 1-for-4. Flenniken struck out eight in falling to 1-2 on the season, while Staschuk pitched the final two innings of relief, setting the 'Roos down in order.
Deanna Friese, the 2011 Summit League Pitcher of the Year, went the full seven innings, striking out seven and walking three while giving up a pair of earned runs. Lauren Rodriguez was 2-for-3 for the 'Roos with two RBI's.
The loss ends the season for IPFW with a 28-15-1 overall record after earning a berth into the Summit League Championships for the third time in four years in the league.
