Cincinnati, OH – An early offensive push and nine total shots weren't enough for the IPFW men's soccer team on Tuesday evening, as the Mastodons gave up five goals, four alone in the final period to fall to #24 Xavier, 5-0 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
IPFW drops to 3-4-0 on the season, moving its record away from Hefner Field to 1-3. Xavier remains perfect at 3-0-0 in 2011.
Facing a ranked opponent for the second time in as many weeks, IPFW came out firing in the opening frame, taking the game's first two shots. Both came in the 7th minute, when Jason Mills fired a try that was blocked, while Colin Helmrich blasted an attempt that sailed wide.
While the Mastodon frontline forced the tone early, the Xavier offense had an answer of its own.
In the 9th minute, the home team broke the game open and took a 1-0 lead after Musketeer James Queree fired a header into the 'Don net off a long free-kick.
With a 1-0 advantage at halftime, Xavier turned up the offensive prowess in the second frame, adding its second goal just minutes into the final frame. In the 47th minute, Luke Spencer received a pass at midfield, dribbled 20 yards, then fired a chip-shot past IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier, making the contest, 2-0.
Receiving a penalty kick in the 68th minute, Tanner Petrick increased the Musketeer lead to 3-0 after scoring the free shot. Cloutier did make a deflection on the attempt.
Not finished in the contest, James Weber netted Xavier's fourth and fifth goals of the night in the 77th and 83rd minutes, respectively. On the first score, Weber fired a successful attempt from 18 yards out to the far post. With the game in hand, he scored the final goal from the top of the Mastodon box, finalizing the contest at 5-0.
IPFW tagged four shots and earned two corner kicks in the second half, but the final comeback run was too late. Ross McWilliams fired a pair shots in the stretch, but each was blocked by Xavier goalkeeper Justin Marshall.
For the contest, Helmrich led the Mastodons with three shots. McWilliams and Nate Shipman each attempted a shot on goal. Between the posts, Cloutier made five saves.
IPFW now travels to Nashville, Tennessee, where they will take on Lipscomb on Friday, Sept. 16. The contest will be played at Rose Park on the campus of Belmont University. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m EST.
