Nashville, TN – In a tightly played contest, senior Colin Helmrich brought the IPFW men's soccer team back from a one-score deficit late in the first half to salvage a 2-2 tie against Lipscomb on Friday evening in Nashville, Tennessee. IPFW is now 3-4-1 on the 2011 season, while Lipscomb moves to 1-5-1.
The Mastodons wasted no time breaking the game open, as the visitors pushed the tempo early after earning an offside call. Moments later, the offensive assault paid off.
In the 6th minute, Max Touloute made his presence known after receiving a pass from Jason Mills in the Bison box, then fired a one-timer past Bison goalkeeper Brent McGee, giving the 'Dons a 1-0 lead.
As the teams battled for possession up and down the field, the Bison answered with back-to-back goals in 26th and 39th minutes, respectively. Lipscomb's Garrett Pettis netted both scores, beating IPFW goalkeeper Ryan Bristol to the far post on each goal.
Down 2-1, IPFW regrouped on both ends before heading into halftime, tying the contest minutes before the break. In the 42nd minute, Helmrich fired his second shot up to that point and knotted the score at 2-2 after retrieving an on point pass from Myles Stanley.
While the first half featured a combined four goals, both teams failed to break the tie in the second frame, as the contest moved into two overtime periods.
Despite a strong first half, the Mastodon frontline was unable to fire a single shot in either extra overtime session. However, the 'Don defense, led by Bristol, allowed just three Lipscomb shots in the final periods, forcing a game-decision of 2-2 as the final horn sounded.
The Mastodons were led by Touloute, who netted a first-half goal and tagged four shots. Helmrich scored his sixth goal of the season, taking three shots on Friday. As a team, the 'Dons blasted 11 attempts in 110 minutes. Bristol finished the contest with a game-high six saves.
IPFW will have a day off before returning to action for its next match on Sunday, Sept. 18, when they take on Belmont in the Hyatt Place Select / Lipscomb Invitational Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee. Match time is set for 3:00 p.m. EST.
