Nashville, TN – The IPFW men's soccer team posted nine shots, three off the foot of freshman Nate Shipman, but the Belmont offense found the net early in the first half and didn't look back, as the Mastodons fell 4-0 to the Bruins in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday afternoon.
With this loss, IPFW falls to 3-5-1 in 2011. Belmont improves to 4-3-0 with the win, claiming the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational in the process.
Wasting no time, Belmont found the scoreboard just three minutes into the contest after Brandon Tarr beat diving IPFW goalkeeper Ryan Bristol to the far post, giving the Bruins an early 1-0 lead.
Posting one shot in the first half, the Mastodons nearly tied the game in 18th minute, when Corey Thompson blasted a strong right-footed attempt that was saved by Bruin goalkeeper Lou Manning. With the save, Manning and Belmont took the one-score lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Mastodon offense put forth a more aggressive attack, tagging eight shots in the final period. However, six of the attempts were saved by Manning, while the remaining two missed wide of net.
In the meantime, the Belmont frontline added to its lead throughout the period.
In the 50th minute, Bruin Nico Olsak lofted a pass to teammate Dan Meacock, who then directed a header into the back of the 'Don net, making the score, 2-0. Minutes later, Belmont increased its lead to three after Diego Figueroa beat Bristol to the far post on a right-footed one-timer. In the 81st minute, the Bruins netted their final goal, when Tarr scored off a deflection in the Mastodon box, ending the offensive outburst at 4-0.
On offense, Shipman led the 'Dons with three shots. Colin Helmrich and Thompson each blasted a pair on Sunday. For the contest, Bristol made five saves in 68 minutes of action, while Brandon Cloutier played 21 minutes between the posts, blocking four balls. Belmont's Olsak assisted on three of four Bruin goals.
The Mastodons will return to the Hefner Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Sept. 21, when they host Horizon League-opponent Butler. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
