Fort Wayne, IN - Tied 1-1 at halftime, the IPFW men's soccer team couldn't prevent a late Butler scoring run, as the Bulldogs netted two second-half goals to down IPFW, 3-1 on Wednesday evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne.
The Mastodons drop their second-straight contest with the loss, falling to 3-6-1 on the 2011 season. The Bulldogs improve to 4-2-1 with the road win.
In an evenly played opening-half, IPFW made its presence known early after Colin Helmrich and Liridon Qafleshi fired the game's first two shots. Butler responded with back-to-back attempts, before Helmrich nearly gave the 'Dons the lead with a blast in 17th minute. The attempt, however, was blocked.
In the 26th minute, Butler broke open the scoreless game, when Justin Sass received a double-pass inside the Mastodon box, then directed a header over the reaching hands of 'Don goalkeeper Ryan Bristol and into the net.
Down 1-0, the Mastodons answered quickly with a goal of their own in the 29th minute. After a mad scramble in the Bulldog box, Helmrich retrieved the ball from 18-yards out, then footed a curving shot into the back of the Butler net, evening the contest at 1-1.
As the teams traded possessions for much of the second half, the visitors turned up the offensive assault late in the game, keying in on mismatches on the IPFW backline.
In the 74th minute, Adam Glanzer netted Butler's second goal of the game with a blast to the far post past Bristol, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Not finished, Butler scored its third and final goal eight minutes later, when Adekunle Oluyedun flipped a floater over Bristol to make the contest 3-1.
With little time to spare, IPFW made one last push in the game's final minutes, but its attempt at a comeback fell short as time expired.
Helmrich fired three shots and scored his seventh goal of the season on Wednesday. Jason Mills attempted two shots, while Qafleshi, Corey Thompson and Brent Helton each managed one. In goal, Bristol posted two saves.
Butler outshot IPFW in the contest by a count of 14-8.
The Mastodons will endure a nine-day break before returning to action on Sept. 30, when they open Summit League play at Oral Roberts. Match time is set for 8:00 pm EST.
