IPFW Bounces Oral Roberts, 3-1 in Summit League Opener

TULSA, Okla. – Led by the offensive trio of Colin Helmrich, Max Touloute and Liridon Qafleshi, the IPFW men's soccer team opened the 2011 Summit League slate on a high-note with a convincing 3-1 win over Oral Roberts on Friday evening in Tulsa, Okla.
With the road victory, the Mastodons improve to 4-6-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, snapping a four-game winless streak. Oral Roberts drops to 2-6-0 (0-1-0) with the loss.
The Mastodon defense had its hands full early in the contest, as the Golden Eagles made its presence known by marching down the field and firing three quick shots.
Not shaken, the IPFW offense took control in the 17th minute, when Helmrich netted his eighth goal of the season after blasting a shot to the far post, giving the Mastodons a 1-0 early lead. Touloute earned the assist on the play.
Taking the one-goal advantage into halftime, IPFW continued its offensive assault in the second period, scoring a pair of goals to all but seal the road victory.
In the 52nd minute, Touloute made the contest 2-0 after slipping a shot past the reaching hands of Golden Eagle
goalkeeper Nick Petolick. With a two-goal lead, IPFW stepped up its defensive game, stopping a frustrated Oral Roberts offense on numerous occasions. In the 82 minute, Qafleshi scored his first goal of the season and put the game out of reach. The redshirt-senior blasted a one-timer to the near post after retrieving a pass from Touloute.
Golden Eagle Sid Stewart found the back of the net for the home team in the 85th minute, nearly giving the Mastodons its second shutout of the 2011 season.
Helmrich led IPFW with three shots on net and recorded a goal. Touloute added his ninth score in 2011 and tallied two assists to go with two shots. Qafleshi fired two shots and netted a goal. Mastodon goalkeeper Ryan Bristol had a great night between the posts, making seven saves. Oral Roberts outshot IPFW 24-11 in the contest.
The Mastodons will look for similar results in two days when they step out of conference competition and travel to Conway, Ark., to take on Central Arkansas on Oct. 2. Game time is set for noon EST.
