FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Playing without two starters out because of injury, the IPFW Mastodons fell victim to a 16-2 second-half run, turning a tie score into a 14-point deficit, as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies pulled away late for a 67-47 Summit League win at the Memorial Coliseum.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 6-11 on the year and 4-3 in the Summit League, while Oakland improves to 8-8 overall, with an identical 4-3 league mark.
Amanda Hyde scored a team-high 10 points, as Mur Hagerman scored a career-high nine points, and Anne Boese added eight. Hyde pulled down a team-best five rebounds, while also leading the team with two blocked shots, two steals, and tying for the team-lead with two assists.
IPFW leading scorer Stephanie Rosado and starting guard Rachel Mauk each missed the game because of injury.
The teams battled back-and-forth for the first six minutes, with the Grizzlies leading 11-9 with 13:48 to play before the 'Dons ran off 10 straight points, seven of those points coming from Hagerman, giving IPFW an eight point lead.
The advantage remained at eight through the eight-minute mark after Boese made a jumper, giving IPFW a 23-15 lead. Oakland fought back, eventually tying the score in the first half at 25 before Hillary Moore scored the half's final points, giving IPFW a 27-25 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
IPFW increased its lead to there in the second half after a Stefanie Mauk three-point basket gave IPFW a 30-27 advantage. Six straight Oakland points gave the visitors a three-point lead, before Anne Boese made one her two three-point baskets in the game, knotting the score at 33.
The teams traded baskets, as the score remained tied at 35 with 14:15 to play in the contest before the Golden Grizzlies out-scored IPFW 16-2 over the next eight and a half minutes, pushing the advantage to 14.
IPFW never closed to within single digits the rest of the way, as Oakland scored the game's final four points to secure the 20-point, 67-47 victory.
Boese, with her two three-point baskets, re-claimed the Summit League career record lead, cruising past South Dakota State's Jill Young. The advantage in the record books lasted only a few hours, as the Jackrabbit senior also made a pair of three-point baskets, and took a one-make lead in the battle for the record.
The 'Dons step out of conference play for the final time in the 2011-12 season on Monday evening when the Longwood Lancers come to the Gates Sports Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Monday, January 16.
