Bowling Green comes into the mid-week non-conference battle having split their last eight matches, including a loss to then-10th ranked Akron 2-0.
The Falcons have been out-scored 16-15 on the year, and two-thirds of the team's goals have come from Danny Baraldi and Anthony Grant, who each have five goals this season. ALL-TIME SERIES
IPFW and Bowling Green have faced off 11 times, the first time in 1982, and every year since 2002.
The Falcons won the opener 5-0 in Fort Wayne in 1982, before the Mastodons returned the favor in 2002 with a 2-1 win in Bowling Green. The next four meetings were split, with IPFW winning once in both Fort Wayne and Bowling Green.
Since 2007 the Falcons have had their ownership of the series, going 3-0-2 against the Mastodons in the last five meetings.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
IPFW sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier has been named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
The award was the second of Cloutier's career, as he helped the Mastodons to a 1-1 record on the week with 10 saves in the two matches.
On Tuesday, Cloutier collected seven saves against Northern Kentucky in a 2-1 loss, before coming back with three stops in IPFW's 1-0 win over then-third place Omaha on Saturday.
This season Cloutier has a 2.36 goals against average with 73 saves in 14 matches played. He ranks inside of the top-10 in the NCAA in total saves.
LAST TIME OUT
Behind a first-half goal from sophomore Nate Shipman, and a shutout in goal from classmate Brandon Cloutier, the IPFW Mastodons secured its first win of the 2012 season by a 1-0 score of the Omaha Mavericks in a physical match on Saturday evening at the Hefner Soccer Field.
The goal was the first in Shipman's career, while Cloutier picked up the third shutout of his young career, and his 73rd save of the season. The shutout came against a strong offensive Maverick team, which ranked 20th nationally averaging 2.0 goals per game, and had only been shut out two times coming into the match.
Playing on a wet field after an afternoon of rain, the game started as a defensive battle, with the Mavericks starting out as the primary offensive team, putting up six shots in the first 28 minutes of the game, two of those shots saved by Cloutier, one was blocked, and another three went high.
The empty scoreboard ended when Mastodon freshman Jackson Tooke headed the ball towards the goal. Tooke's shot attempt was blocked, but when directly to Shipman, who left his feet to put a solid foot on the ball, and put it into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal 30:42 into the game.
That Shipman goal was the only score of the contest, despite another seven shots for Omaha, while the Mastodons had nine more attempts after the goal.
The physical play continued through the second half. After two yellow cards in the first half, the teams combined for 15 second-half fouls, and eight yellow cards, evenly distributed between the teams for the second half and game.
