SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons come into this weekend game needing a win to climb into first place in the Summit League standings with two matches remaining on the schedule after the match-up with the Golden Grizzlies.
The Mastodons are on a four-match unbeaten streak after a weekend sweep of South Dakota State and North Dakota State, a win at South Dakota, and a 1-1 tie against the Kansas City Kangaroos on October 14.
For the year, the team is led offensively by a trio of players with three goals apiece, as Danielle Bishop, Erin Gill, and Arianne Mason each have three tallies for the 'Dons, with Rachel Good and Sydney Hoareau each picking up two scores.
Senior Tylar Allison etched her name in the career record books against UMKC, picking up her 11th career assist, which breaks the previous career mark, and now has four helpers on the year. Tessa Edwards has two assists, with seven others adding one each.
Freshman goalkeeper Sam Pavlika has been in goal for the entire 1300-plus minutes of the season, and has a 0.97 goals against average with 64 saves and four shutouts.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland comes into their final road match of the season sitting in sole possession of first place in the league standings with 12 points; however, is not yet guaranteed a spot into the postseason league tournament.
The Golden Grizzlies are 4-1 in their last five games, and are led on the season by Kyla Kellermann who has eight goals and three assists for 19 points. Both the goals and points are tops in the Summit League. Meghan Reynolds has four goals, with Marlen Knopf scoring three on the year for an Oakland squad that ranks second in the league in scoring offense.
Abigail Haelewyn has nine assists on the year, eighth-most in the NCAA this season, as four others - Kellermann, Reynolds, Knopf, and Nicole DeLuca - each have three helpers.
In goal, senior Shannon Coley has played just over 1,000 of the team's 1300-plus minutes this season, and has a 0.89 goals against average with 44 saves and four shutouts.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Oakland has swept each of the previous six meetings between the Summit League travel partners, out-scoring IPFW 26-3 in those six meetings.
The first meeting between the teams came in 2001, IPFW's first year of NCAA Division I eligibility. That year the team fell to the Golden Grizzlies 6-0. The next time the two squads met up on the soccer pitch was 2007, the Mastodons' first season in the Summit League, and Oakland greeted them with a 4-0 defeat.
The years of 2008 and 2009 saw 6-1 and 4-0 losses, before the Mastodons scored two goals in the 2010 meeting, falling 5-2. Last season was the closest of the contests, a 1-0 loss in Rochester on a goal in the 39th minute of the match.
LAST MEETING
The Grizzlies opened up the game by coming out of the gate swinging. OU's Serena San Cartier recorded two shots in the first 10 minutes, but was denied by the Mastodon defense, including a save by freshman goalie, Krysta Hedrick.
After coming up short after several scoring opportunities, the Grizzlies made it on the board when Kyla Kellermann scored her fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute. After receiving a pass from Julianne Boyle, Kellermann took a shot from eight-yards out in order to beat Hedrick.
IPFW junior Lisa Underwood nearly tied the game in the 37th minute when she took a shot that was only denied by the post.
Junior Danielle Bishop followed up Underwood's attack by forcing a save by OU goalie, Anne Berschbach, on a shot less than a minute later.
The Grizzlies finished the first half the same way they started, by creating scoring opportunities, which the IPFW defense was able to withstand. Hedrick finished the half with three total saves in goal.
