FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's basketball team set a single-game school record for fewest points allowed in a game, as the Mastodon offense also had a much-needed breakout, as IPFW ran past the Judson Eagles by a 92-22 final score at the Memorial Coliseum.
The 22 points are the fewest allowed in school history, fewer than the previous low of 36 set against IU-East on November 25, 2008. The 70-point margin of victory is also a single-game school record, as the previous record was 52 set against Marygrove in a 106-54 win on December 1, 2007.
Four Mastodon players reached double-figure scoring, led by a career-high 17 from Herbert Graham, while Frank Gaines scored 15, Joe Reed 14, and Luis Jacobo 13. Kevin Harden finished with nine points, while Isaiah McCray, Mario Hines, and Joe Edwards each scored eight.
McCray pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, with Jacobo snagging six, as IPFW out-rebounded the Eagles 43-to-23. Joe Edwards dished out a career-high five assists, while Herbert Graham picked up four steals.
IPFW (3-3) scored the first four points of the game before Judson knocked down a basket with 16:20 to play in the first half, cutting the deficit in half. From there, IPFW ran off 17 consecutive points over a nearly nine minute span, as IPFW climbed ahead 21-2.
The Mastodons led 30-4 after a Graham lay-in with 4:46 to play, and 38-6 after a Reed lay-up, before Judson closed the first half by scoring five of the last seven points to close the halftime gap to 40-11 at the break.
IPFW used runs of 12-0, 16-0, and 20-0 in the second half, pushing the team's lead to as many as 72, before the Eagles got the final two points of the game to give the game its 92-22 final score.
IPFW made 35-of-58 shots from the field (60.3 percent), 9-of-19 on 3's (47.4 percent), and 13-of-15 on free throw tries (86.7 percent), while holding Judson to 17.6 percent (9-of-51) from the field, 2-of-26 (7.7%) from 3's, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. IPFW forced 28 turnovers, picking up 17 steals and 17 assists.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, November 24 when the squad travels to Hanover, N.H. to face off against the Dartmouth Big Green (1-1) in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
