FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Junior Amanda Hyde scored a career-high 22 points on Saturday afternoon as the IPFW women's basketball team moved to .500 (2-2 overall) with a 51-46 win over Coastal Carolina.
Hyde was the player of the game for IPFW as she scored her 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor. She knocked down one 3-point field goal and was also 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Hyde provided IPFW with more than just scoring as she also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists in 38 minutes of action.
Stefanie Mauk was also a key contributor to the win over Coastal Carolina as she led the team with eight rebounds and four steals. Three of Mauk's team-high eight rebounds came on the offensive end. Joining S. Mauk with three offensive rebounds was sophomore Hillary Moore. Moore added three on the defensive end to total a season-high six boards on Saturday.
Point guard Haley Seibert didn't make a field goal against Coastal Carolina, but she did hit all six of her free throw attempts to score six points against the Chanticleers. She added four rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes of action. Seibert's most impressive stat on Saturday was that she only recorded one turnover against the defensive pressure of Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina (4-2) had two players in double figure scoring as AJ Jordan ended the day with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting and Shatia Cole added 10. IPFW held Coastal Carolina to just 46 points after the Chanticleers scored 79 points in each of their last two games. The Mastodons were focused on the defensive end of the court as they held Coastal Carolina to just 34 percent shooting from the floor.
IPFW jumped out to a 7-2 lead just five minutes into the contest as Rebecca Bruner hit a jumper off an assist from Rachel Mauk. The lead would be trimmed to one with four minutes remaining in the opening half, and Coastal Carolina took their first lead of the game at the 3:08 mark off a pair of free throws from Alexx Puckett. Hyde responded with back-to-back field goals as the Mastodons held a 21-20 lead at halftime.
Puckett regained the lead for Coastal Carolina early in the second half as her jumper but the Chanticleers up by a point. Katelyn Connor drilled a 3-point field goal on the next possession which forced IPFW to call a 30 second timeout. The Mastodons regained their composure and the lead after a 3-point field goal from Hyde at the 17:16 mark.
The IPFW lead would grow to 10 points with just over 14 minutes remaining, but Coastal Carolina kept it interesting as the lead would be cut to four with just 5:40 remaining. Hyde pushed the lead back to eight with 3:16 on the clock, but a 3-point field goal from Cole made the score 49-46 with one minute remaining. Hyde sealed the win with two free throws in the closing seconds and a missed three 3-point field goal from Megan Pittman would signal the end of the game for Coastal Carolina.
IPFW will take one day off and then travel to Bloomington, Ind. to face the Hoosiers on Monday night. Tip-off in Assembly Hall is scheduled for 7 p.m.
