Men's Basketball Closes 2012 on the Road

INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW Mastodons close out the 2012 calendar year on the road for a pair of games, the first of which coming on December 27 when the squad faces off against in-state rival IUPUI in a 7 p.m. tip-off at Bakers Life Fieldhouse.

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
IUPUI comes in the first post-Christmas game with a 5-10 overall record; however, in their last game, the Jaguars toppled in-state rival Ball State by a 77-68 score on December 23.
In the win, Sean Esposito erupted for 20 points, hitting 6-of-9 from long range, while John Hart scored 14, Lyonell Gaines 13, and Jordan Shanklin 11. Hart pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, as Greg Rice dished out seven assists to go with his nine points.
Hart paces the team in the season averaging 14.7 points per game, while Mitchell Patton is just behind at 14.4. Ian Chiles, who has played in just four games, averages 10.3. Donovan Gibbs and Shanklin put up 8.9 and 7.5 points per game each.
On the season the Jaguars get out-rebounded by 6.5 rebounds per game, and are led by Gibbs who pulls down 6.8, while Patton grabs 5.8. Rice has 44 assists to lead the squad, as Hart has a team-best 23 steals.
ALL-TIME SERIES
IUPUI leads the all-time series between the teams 25-9. The Jaguars took eight of the first nine meetings between the teams, before IPFW rattled off four straight wins in the series. Since then IUPUI has won 16-of-21 games, including a nine-game win streak in the series, which was snapped in Indianapolis on January 31, 2010 when Zach Plackemeier hit a buzzer beater at Conseco Fieldhouse (now named Bankers Life Fieldhouse) to top the Jaguars in overtime.
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
IPFW senior Frank Gaines currently has 1,438 career points, fourth most in a career in IPFW history, recently passing former teammate Ben Botts for fourth all-time, and just 13 away from passing Nick Wise for third all-time The career school record is 1,765 held by IPFW Hall of Famer Sean Gibson.

QUICK HITTERS
• IPFW senior Frank Gaines ranks fourth in school history with 1,438 points, and needs 13 points to pass Nick Wise (1999-02) for third on the scoring list.
• As of the latest NCAA Rankings (December 16), IPFW ranks 20th in the country in three-point field goal defense, 53rd in rebounding margin, and 83rd in scoring defense.
• Frank Gaines has reached double-figure scoring 66 times in his career and 31 20-point games, but saw his 27-game double-figure streak snapped against Miami (Ohio). His previous time being held to single digits was December 20, 2011 against Purdue.
• Against Judson, IPFW set single-game school records for fewest points allowed (22), and largest margin of victory (70 points)
• Earlier this year in a triple-overtime win over Texas-Pan America, IPFW set single-game school records with 57 free throw attempts, while the team's 63 rebounds are the second-most in school history.
• The Mastodons have trailed for four minutes and 13 seconds more than they have led this season, and have not trailed in three total games.
• IPFW is 1-1 all-time on December 27
• Nine of ten IPFW players who have seen action this season have started at least one game
• IPFW is 5-1 this season when leading at halftime, and are 14-5 under Jasick when leading after the first 20 minutes; however, the team is 1-6 (2-21 under Jasick) when trailing at the break
• Tony Jasick is the 13th youngest head coach in NCAA Division I
• Six different players have led the team in scoring this season (including ties), led by Gaines, who has led the team eight times
• Gaines also stands second in career school history in free throws made and attempted, sixth in rebounding, 9th in blocked shots, and 10th in steals
• The Mastodons have out-rebounded 10-of-13 teams this season, and are an even 5-5 when out-rebounding their opponents
