SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS
Southern Utah holds an overall record of 6-21. Their 59-45 loss to Oakland on Saturday eliminated their chance to play in the 2012 Summit League Tournament. The loss also gave IPFW an automatic bid. Southern Utah has two league wins this season. They defeated IPFW on Jan. 21 and IUPUI on Feb. 11.
Hailey Mandelko, Carli Moreland and Andrea Jones lead the Thunderbird offense. Each player averages over 10 points per game. Moreland also serves as the team leader in rebounds averaging 8.3 per contest. DJ Norman and Kimie Hawkins round out Southern Utah's starting five. Norman had a breakout performance against IPFW in the first matchup of the year as she scored 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
LAST TIME OUT
IPFW nearly knocked off Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon at the Gates Sports Center. Each team scored 27 points in the first half and matched that effort in the second, sending the game into overtime. Kevi Luper scored six points in overtime to lead the Golden Eagles to victory.
Four Mastodons reached double figure scoring against Oral Roberts (18-9, 12-4 Summit). Rachel Mauk came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points, while senior Sarah Haluska recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Stephanie Rosado and Anne Boese each added 12 points for IPFW.
Kevi Luper once again showed why she is one of the top players in the Summit League scoring a game-high 22 points of 8-of-21 shooting. She went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe which led to the Oral Roberts win. Bernadett Balla and Jaci Bigham also played well for the Golden Eagles. Ball had 12 points and four rebounds, while Bigham posted eight points and seven boards.
Kevi Luper attacked the basket and forced a foul near the baseline with 12 second left in overtime. Luper stepped up and knocked down both free throw attempts giving ORU the one point advantage. IPFW had the last shot and they ended up with a good look, but Rachel Mauk's 3-pointer was just off putting the IPFW overall record at 8-18 overall (5-10 Summit).
QUICK HITTERS
• IPFW senior Anne Boese is currently the Summit League career record holder for three-point field goals made with 291. Boese will have to hold off South Dakota State senior Jill Young during the final stretch of the season as Young has 284. Both of these sharpshooters took down the old record of 262 which was held by Buffalo's Brenna Doty. Doty played from 1994-97.
• The Mastodons have made a three-point basket in 401 consecutive games, which is now the fourth longest active streak in the NCAA. IPFW moved to fourth on Feb. 9 as the Loyola Ramblers went 0-for-8 from the three-point line snapping their streak at 446.
• Senior Stephanie Rosado has reached double figure scoring in each of her last nine starts.
• IPFW has used nine different starting lineups this season, with only Anne Boese starting all 26 games for the Mastodons.
• IPFW set a new school record vs SDSU by hitting all 19 of their free throw attempts. The 19-for-19 mark tops the old record of 15-for-15 which was set during the 1993 season. It also marks the third best performance from the charity stripe in Summit League history.
• In other milestone watches, both Stephanie Rosado and Anne Boese have eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau this month. Rosado accomplished the feat against UMKC on December 3, while Boese did it against Valparaiso three days later. Rosado currently has 1,201 career points, while Boese is close behind her at 1,185.
