KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Megan Flenniken's one-hit gem in the nightcap helped pace IPFW to a first-day sweep of the UMKC Kangaroos in Summit League action on Saturday, winning 4-3 in the opener, and 2-0 in the day finale.
With the pair of wins, IPFW improves to 22-6 on the season, and 7-1 in Summit League play, earning sole possession of second place in the league standings, behind only North Dakota State and its 6-0 league mark. UMKC, the preseason Summit League favorite, falls to 11-13 on the year, and 1-4 in The League.
Flenniken and Miranda Kramer each picked up pitching wins for the Mastodons on the day, as the pair did not allow a run in 10.2 innings of work, while combining to strike out 10. Brittany Kachur was 4-for-6 at the plate in the two games, as Courtney Cronin was 4-for-7 with two doubles, a home run, and four RBI's, with a day slugging percentage of 1.286.
In game one, the Mastodon jumped ahead quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, when Cronin drove in Larissa Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet with a double to left field, giving IPFW a lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
After UMKC countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, IPFW's Dani Pugh led off the second inning with her third home run of the season, giving the 'Dons a 3-1 lead.
The Kangaroos once again cut into the deficit with a run in the third, cutting the gap to 3-2 before Alex Bousquet doubled home Brittany Kachur for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fourth inning. The hosts scored again in the bottom of the fourth, but would not score again in the game, as Miranda Kramer came in to pitch the final three and two-thirds of an inning, picking up the win, improving to 5-1 this year, and not allowing a run.
Four Mastodon batters: Alex Bousquet, Cronin, Kachur, and Kayti Hanson, each had two hits, as Cronin chased home two with Alex Bousquet and Pugh driving in the other two runs. Cronin started the game for IPFW, pitching the first three and a third inning, scattering four hits and two earned runs while walking three. Kramer also gave up four hits, but left all of the baserunners stranded, while striking out four and walking one.
The nightcap scoring started with a Cronin home run in the top of the second, her fifth of the season and 17th of her career, moving her to third in career longballs in IPFW softball history. Cronin later drove in Larissa Franklin, who reached via an error, to give the game its eventual final score of 2-0.
Flenniken, now 6-3 on the year, gave up just one hit, a two-out single in the third inning, while striking out six and walking five, in picking up her first career shutout. Her counterpart in the UMKC circle, defending Summit League Pitcher of the Year Deanna Friese, gave up just one earned run and struck out eight in falling to 3-8 this season.
At 22-6 on the year, the Mastodons are tied for the best 28-game start in program history, tied with the 1993 squad that also started the season 22-6, before losing the finale and ending at 22-7.
The Mastodons and Kangaroos meet up one last time tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. EST.
