Mastodons Defeat Kangaroos, 4-3, Advance on to the Championship

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The No. 2 seeded IPFW Mastodons advance to the conference final for the fourth-consecutive year at the Summit League Championship after edging UMKC, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo., at the Woodside Country Club.
In doubles, the Mastodons earned the early 1-0 lead over the Kangaroos with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
The IPFW duo of Anita Henestrosa and Alex Forsyth dominated the No. 2 position where they won 8-2 over Amelie Amsallem and Suzan Lisenby. Frederique Sunstrum and Raquel Vescovi followed up with an 8-5 win at No. 3 against Madeline Schulte and Gabriela Pintos to seal the doubles point for the 'Dons.
The Mastodons got off to a rough start in singles action where they dropped three-straight matches at Nos. 2, 5 and 1, respectively.
UMKC tied the match at 1-1 when Bouet won by a 6-0, 6-2 count against IPFW's Marcy Huck at the No. 2 slot. At the No. 5 slot, the 'Roos moved ahead after Lisenby defeated IPFW's Sunstrum, 7-5, 6-3. UMKC followed with another win after Dalvai defeated Henestrosa, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
However, IPFW continued to fight and bounced back with three-straight wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 6, respectively.
Vescovi won by a 7-5 and 6-3 count at the No. 3 slot against UMKC's Amsallem to bring IPFW within one. At the No. 4 position, Kiefer forced a three-set match to even the score at 3-3. Kiefer won 6-2 in her first set against Schulte followed by a 6-3 loss, however, Kiefer came back with a 6-4 victory in the third set. In a deciding match at the No. 6 slot, Forsyth dropped the first set against Jillian Yakominich, 6-3, but followed with 6-2, 6-1 wins in the remaining sets to seal the team win of 4-3.
In a quest for a third-straight Summit League Championship title, IPFW will return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST. The 'Dons will now face the winner of the Oral Roberts (No. 1 seed) / Southern Utah (No. 4 seed)
