
Baseball Ends 2012 Season with 10-4 Loss at Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The 2012 baseball season ended on Saturday afternoon as the Mastodons were defeated by Southern Illinois by the final score of 10-4. Carter DeBoe led IPFW offensively going 2-for-4 from the plate with a team-high three RBI's.
Southern Illinois scored five runs in the third and one in the fifth, but the difference maker came in the bottom of the eighth inning for the second straight day as SIU posted four runs to grab a 10-4 advantage. The Salukis scored nine of their 10 runs with two outs in the inning.
The top of the Southern Illinois lineup was great as the first four batters all recorded at least one RBI. Jake Welch and Chris Serritella each hit a double for SIU. Welch wasn't done as the second baseman also came up with a triple against the Mastodons. Jordan Sivertsen and Donny Duschinsky put their stamp on the win with home runs in the final game of the season for IPFW.
DeBoe recorded his 15th double of the year and his third triple of the season in the loss to Southern Illinois. Malcolm White also recorded a double against the Salukis in the sixth inning.
Lucas Salerno led off the top of the sixth inning with a single to left field after the SIU pitching change. Clay Hathaway followed in the lineup with a single of hiw own giving the 'Dons two base runners. Head Coach Bobby Pierce called for a hit and run that advanced both runners into scoring position with Carter DeBoe coming to bat. DeBoe delievered with a two-RBI double to right field scoring the first two runs of the series for IPFW. DeBoe went on to steal third base and a bad throw allowed him to come home for the final run of the inning. DeBoe picked up his third RBI of the game in the top of the eighth inning as Malcolm White came round to score after the DeBoe triple.
Travis Reboulet got the start for IPFW against the Salukis. Reboulet threw 4.2 innings against SIU allowing five hits which results in six earned runs. The right hander struck out five, but walked four in his final appearance of the season. Also getting time on the mound in the season finale was Kyle Sorensen and Steve Danielak. Sorensen held SIU down to just one hit in his 1.1 innings of work as Danielak was tagged with four earned runs off four hits in the final two innings of the game.
The win went to Sam Coonrod who threw the first five innings of the game against IPFW. The 'Dons hit the ball well once Aaron Snyder entered the game from the bullpen, but it didn't last long Snyder was quickly replaced by Tyler Dray. The final Saluki to pitch against IPFW was Todd Eaton. Eaton was on the mound for the final two innings of action. He struck out two while only giving up two hits.
The Mastodons end the 2012 season with an overall record of 16-40. Two Mastodons were able to break single-season school records during the year. White set the walks record by reaching first base 54 times on the year while Danielak impacted the program by recording six saves in 2012.
