FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons used power in the opener, behind three home runs and a single-game record 14 strikeouts, while using a bit of good luck to take home the victory in game two, as the Mastodons swept the South Dakota Coyotes 5-1, 2-1 in games one and two of the final Summit League series of the season.
With the wins, the Mastodons improve to 41-12 on the year, and 16-7 in Summit League play, while South Dakota falls to 16-38 on the year, and 12-11 in the league.
In the opener, freshman pitcher Miranda Kramer baffled the Coyote hitters all game, to the tune of 14 strikeouts, breaking the previous single-game record set by Courtney Cronin earlier this season.
After giving up a run on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning, the 'Dons bats came awake, as the bottom of the third inning was led off by a Jessica Haskins solo home run to left field, the first of the freshman's career, knotting the score at one run apiece. After a groundout and a single, Alex Bousquet followed with her eighth homer of the year, staking the Mastodons to a 3-1 lead.
IPFW would not give up their lead for the remainder of the game, as the hosts on the day added to their advantage when Kayti Hanson singled before Haskins lifted her second home run of the game to left field, scoring two and giving the game its 5-1 final score.
Kramer struck out eight of the nine batters in the Coyote lineup, and struck out the side three times in the game - the first, fourth, and fifth innings - while striking out at least two batters in an inning five times. With the win the freshman improved to 13-4 on the season, while dropping her season ERA to 1.90.
Haskins was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI's, while Brittany Kachur was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the nightcap the teams traded one-run second innings, USD's coming on back-to-back doubles, while IPFW used small-ball. Dani Pugh led of IPFW's half of the second inning with a walk, before being advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout, setting the table for Hanson who hit a seeing-eye single through the gap in the left side of the infield to knot the score at one run apiece.
IPFW's Courtney Cronin and South Dakota's Paige Policky traded shutout innings for the next four frames, before Cronin struck out the side in order in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Mastodons were able to take advantage of a Coyote fielding error and an infield single to put runners at first and second, before a sacrifice bunt moved each runner ahead 60 feet; however, Haskins was thrown out on the next pitch when she over-stretched her lead, putting two outs on the board and a runner at second.
Alex Bousquet followed with a soft groundball to theUSD shortstop; however, the ball slipped coming out of the Coyote middle infielder's hand, and sailed away from the first baseman, allowing Larissa Franklin to score from second and end the contest.
Courtney Cronin went the distance in the nightcap, striking out six while scattering six hits and allowing one run, improving to 18-2 on the season, tying the single-season school record for victories in a season. The 18 wins puts her in a three-way tie at the top of the school record, as she is tied with her own 2011 and 2010 season totals.
Larissa Franklin was 2-for-4 for IPFW, while she and Pugh scored the team's runs.
With the pair of wins, the Mastodons have secured the second seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament, as their hopes of the top seed were thwarted when North Dakota State was able to hold on against Southern Utah in game one of the doubleheader, giving the Bison the 2012 regular season crown.
The two teams meet up for the third and final time on senior day at the IPFW Softball Field, as the team will honor the two IPFW seniors on this years' squad, Cassie Wolfe and Cronin, with the first pitch of the game slated for 1 p.m.
