Mastodons Start Strong at BSU Fall Invite

Day One Results – Fall Invite
MUNCIE, Ind. -- After the first day of competition the women's tennis team posted their best winning percentage ever at any Fall Invitational on Friday night since becoming a Division I program.
The Mastodons went 15-2 on the day posting a 10-1 record in singles, followed by a 5-1 mark in doubles. Five of the six players on the roster are in the semifinals of their single flights and two of IPFW's three doubles teams are also in the semifinals.
"I was really impressed and proud of our play today,” said head coach Eric Burns. “We were very sharp and focused in all of our matches. This was probably our best day ever at a Fall Invitational. I hope tomorrow that we can continue to compete as hard and improve like we did today. Overall, this was a great start to our season."
Caterina Kiefer played great for IPFW in No. 1 singles. Kiefer won her first match 6-2, 2-1 and went on to advance into the semifinals by recording a comeback win over Ball State's Ayaka Terashi 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Anita Henestrosa was also in action for IPFW as she won her first match 6-1, 6-2, but was knocked off in the second round 3-6, 2-6.
Marcy Huck led the Mastodons in No. 3 singles. Huck knocked off a Chicago State opponent 7-5, 6-3 in the first round and ended the day with a comeback win over Ball State's Bethany Moore 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 to earn her spot in the semifinals.
In No. 4 singles it was Kristine Lindal moving on to the semifinals after defeating her first opponent 6-1, 6-2 and her second 6-3, 3-6, 10-1. Theresa Neumeyr was also in action for IPFW in No. 4 singles. Neumeyr defeated Lauren Pickrel of Ball State 6-1, 6-2 and went on to defeat a Chicago State opponent 6-0, 6-3.
Miloslava Shustova represented IPFW in No. 6 singles. Shustova received a bye in the first round, but moved on into the semifinals by defeating a Valparaiso opponent 6-1, 6-0.
The duo of Shustova and Neumeyr went 2-0 on Friday defeating Hamel and Barthels of Valpo in the first round 8-3 and Wild and Moore of Ball State in round two 8-4. The IPFW pair will face Guerazzi and Raymond of Miami in the semifinals.
Also competing for IPFW in No. 1 doubles was the team of Henestrosa and Kiefer. This duo also went 2-0 defeating Power and Sherwood of Cleveland State and the team of Emeralda and Lloyd of Chicago State.
In No. 2 doubles the team of Huck and Lindal won their first match over Dayton 8-3, but they fell in round two against a Louisville team 4-8.
The final day of the Ball State Invitational will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15. Action will begin at 9 a.m. at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
