
Men's Golf Starts 2012 Strong in New York

VERONA, N.Y. – In their first event of the 2012 season, the IPFW Mastodons came out strong, sitting in fifth place at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate hosted by Missouri.
The 'Dons carded rounds of 296 and 297 for a two-round first-day total of 593, in fifth place overall.
Tournament host Missouri leads the field after the first day with a 559 (276-283), while Louisville (285-283-568), Memphis (290-287-577), and Central Connecticut State (297-287-584) sitting just ahead of IPFW. Trailing the Mastodons are Villanova (298-296-594), Army (301-295-596), Cleveland State (305-293-598), Canisius (299-303-602), Loyola (Ill.) (294-309-603), Cincinnati (311-302-613), St. Peter's (307-306-613), and Delaware (315-303-618).
Senior Drew Imel, a recent competitor at the U.S. Amateur Championship, teamed with sophomore E.J. Tackett to each card a two-round score of 146, tying for 18th in the field. Imel carded a one-under 71 in the first round before coming back with a 75; Tackett was a mirror image of Imel, shooting a first-round 75 before coming back with a one-under 71.
Bruno Carvalho carded scores of 74-76 for a six-over par 150, good for a tie of 31st place in the field, while Jacob Groninger rounded out the Mastodon scorers in the field with a 151 (76-75).
Drake Devereaux, in his first collegiate competition, shot an 82-78 for a 160, tied for 59th in the competition. Competing as an individual, freshman Logan Barker shot an 82-84 for a 166, in 66th place.
Missouri's Jace Long leads the field individually with a 12-under 132 (66-66), and he is chased by two others, Andrew Gain of Saint Peter's and Antoine LeSaux of Louisville with a three-under 141.
The Mastodons return to action in the second day of the tournament, for the third and final round to be played on Monday morning.
