FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Kentucky scored the first two and last three goals of the game, with IPFW's only score coming halfway through the first half as the Mastodons fell 5-1to the Kentucky Wildcats on Tuesday evening.
The loss drops IPFW to 0-10 on the season, while Kentucky improves to 5-4.
The Wildcats struck first when Matt Lodge knocked in a free kick from just outside of the box, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead just 11:20 into the game. Eight minutes later an attempted clear by IPFW was deflected by a Mastodon defender directly to Tyler Riggs, who calmly sank the ball into the back of the net on the left side.
Less than two minutes later the Mastodons climbed onto the scoreboard when freshman Jackson Tooke found classmate Corey Tom with a pass that Tom put past the keeper near post to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 21:31 into the contest.
After the flurry of goals to open the game, the final 23 minutes of the first half were scoreless, as Kentucky took a 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Gabriel Conelian scored the first of his two goals when he hit a cross near the goal line that went through IPFW keeper Brandon Cloutier's hands, deflecting into the goal, pushing the lead to 3-1.
Ten minutes later Riggs picked up his second goal of the match when he nabbed a ball from a back-line IPFW defender, and then put a move on Cloutier, dribbling past the IPFW keeper and finishing into the back of the net, pushing the advantage to 4-1. With 2:28 left in the game, Conelian gave the game its final score when he picked up a loose ball, shooting from the right side and beating the keeper to the right-hand side of the post, pushing the score to 5-1.
Tom had a team-high five shots from IPFW, two of those on goal, while Jose Rodriguez had three attempts, one on goal. Brandon Cloutier spent the first 76 and a half minutes in goal, picking up two saves and allowing four goals, while replacement Will Brown gave up one goal while picking up a save in 13 and a half minutes of action.
The Mastodons return to the Hefner Soccer Field on Friday, September 29 when the squad plays host to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in a 7 p.m. kickoff for the 'Dons.
