FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team evened their overall record by defeating Cardinal Stritch on Saturday night 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-18). IPFW is now 1-1 overall early in the 2013 season.
The Mastodons used the entire roster to earn their first win of the season. Andy Sellan recorded a team-high 12 kills in two sets of action to lead the way for IPFW. Sellan hit at a .625 clip as he only made two errors on 16 attempts.
Omar Rivera got the start tonight as the team's go to setter. Rivera responded by recording 19 digs in two sets to lead the 'Dons. Keegan Robbins came in during the third set to end the night with nine assists.
IPFW dominated the opening set as they took a 1-0 advantage on Saturday night with a 25-12 win. The Mastodons broke a 4-4 tie and went on a 10-0 run to take complete control of the action. The run eventually ended, but the momentum continued as IPFW opened up a 20-6 lead which led to the win.
The second set was back and forth early as the game became tied at 12-12. The Mastodons went on a 5-0 run after the tie and held a 20-15 lead down the stretch. An attack error got IPFW to set point and a service ace from Omar Rivera put the Mastodons up 2-0 at the break.
An entirely different lineup was used in set three as Head Coach Arnie Ball decided to give everyone some playing time on Saturday night. The result ended up being the same as IPFW won the set 25-18. IPFW stepped out to a 5-1 lead and eventually took a 10-3 advantage after a service ace from Anthony Randolph. Jeremy Swartz, Kevin Villela and Randolph helped IPFW reach match point and a service error by the Wolves ended the game.
IPFW will return to action with two road matches next weekend at Sacred Heart and at NJIT. The Mastodons will face the Pioneers on Friday, Jan. 18 and then end the trip with a game on Jan. 19 vs. the Highlanders.
