FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's basketball team had South Dakota State on the ropes, but the Jackrabbits crashed the boards in the last seconds of the game and scored with less than a second remaining to improve to 5-0 in the Summit League.
Stefanie Mauk and Erin Murphy each scored 20 points for IPFW on Saturday afternoon. Mauk shot 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-8 from three point land while Murphy shot 5-for-9 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the charity stripe. Mauk added two rebounds, an assist, a steal, and one block in 37 minutes of action. 20 points ties her career-high.
Murphy was also a key contributor for IPFW as she recorded a season-high four assists, three rebounds, and three steals in 36 minutes of play.
Rachel Mauk scored 11 points and grabbed six defensive rebounds for the Mastodons. Haley Seibert and Amanda Hyde rounded out the scoring with eight and five points respectively. Hyde was just 1-of-6 from the floor, but she found ways to impact the game by grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Megan Waytashek was hands down the player of the game for the Jackrabbits as she scored a game-high 30 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Waytashek's last shot had the biggest impact as her offensive rebound in the last few seconds of the game led to the game-winning bucket.
Ashley Eide and Katie Lingle also played well for SDSU. Eide scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds while Lingle ended the day with eight points and eight boards.
The first half was about as even as a game can get as each team made 10 shots from the field, including five from 3-point land. The Mastodons hit three more free throws than the Jackrabbits which gave them a 31-28 lead at the half. SDSU relied heavily on Waytashek in the opening half as the sophomore scored 18 of SDSU's 28 points.
IPFW got off to a good start in the second half as the Mauk sister's pushed the Mastodon lead to eight. Waytashek and the Jackrabbits would cut that lead to one with just over 12 minutes remaining and would go on to tie the game at 47-47 with just under 10 to play.
The Mastodons went on an 11-2 run late in the game which began at 8:11 and ended right after the final media timeout of the game (3:49). Erin Murphy hit a pair of free throws after the stoppage which put the scoreboard at 63-54 in favor of IPFW.
IPFW was limited to just one point in the final 3:49 of the contest, which allowed the Jackrabbits to hang around. Lingle hit two free throws with 3:30 remaining and then followed that possession with a layup, cutting the gap to 63-58.
Waytashek hit a big 3-point field goal with 1:25 remaining, and then Ashley Eide gave SDSU a one point lead after her 3-pointer put the Jackrabbits in front 64-63 with 34 second to play.
IPFW took a timeout and got the ball to Murphy out of the break. She attacked the basket and therefore got to the free throw line with 12 second left. The league's top free throw shooter missed the first, but hit the second to tie the game.
SDSU quickly got the ball in play and down the court. They took three shots before the ball landed in the hands of Waytashek. Waytashek got the ball away just before the final buzzer and the Jackrabbits escaped with a 66-64 win. SDSU is now 13-5 overall with a 5-0 mark in the Summit League. IPFW is now 6-11 with a 2-3 mark in the Summit League.
The Mastodons will return to action with a pair of road games at South Dakota and at Kansas City. The 'Dons will face the Coyotes on Jan. 17 and then end the trip with a game at Kansas City on Jan. 19.
