Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Lourdes 3-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodons defeated Lourdes on Friday night 25-22, 27-25, 25-20 to improve to 3-2 overall. IPFW served the ball very well against the Gray Wolves as they ended the night with eight service aces.
Bryan Saunders and Anthony Randolph paced the offensive attack with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Saunders hit .500 against Lourdes and also chipped in with four blocks. Randolph came up big in clutch situations and led the team with five blocks on the night.
Omar Rivera set up the Mastodons with 30 assists while also doing damage with three service aces. Eddie Rivera matched Omar with three service aces of his own.
Nick DiMarco led Lourdes with a match-high 12 kills. He added three assists and three digs to the box score. Trevor Lund was also an impact player for the visitors as he ended the match with nine kills and nine digs.
Lourdes came out swinging in the first set to grab a 4-0 lead. A service error from Oliver Cizmazia put IPFW on the scoreboard but the Gray Wolves maintained a 7-2 edge early in the game. IPFW went on a run and tied the game at 10-10. They would tie the game again at 13-13 and finally take their first lead of the set at 14-13.
The remainder of the first set went back and forth, but another service error from Cizmazia turned into a crucial point for IPFW as the 'Dons took a 22-20 lead. Eddie Rivera recorded a kill and a service ace down the stretch and senior Anthony Randolph sealed the win with a kill.
The second set also came down to the wire as neither team could break away. The Grey Wolves led 22-20 late in the action, but a service error Trevor Lund followed by a kill from Randolph quickly tied the score.
IPFW caught a break with an attack error from Lourdes, but a service error followed from IPFW which would once again tie the game. Bryan Saunders put the Mastodons at set point with a kill, but IPFW couldn't put Lourdes away as a service error would tie the game at 24-24.
Lourdes grabbed a one point lead after a kill from Frank Craig and Head Coach Arnie Ball used a timeout to regroup. The break in the action worked as the Grey Wolves sent the serve into the net giving IPFW a chance to comeback. An attack error from the Grey Wolves followed the play and Omar Rivera ended the set with a service ace giving the Mastodons a 2-0 edge at halftime.
The third set was more of the same action as fans at the Gates Sports Center got what they came for. The set was tied 19-19 when IPFW went on a 5-0 run to take control of the match. Randolph and Rivera each recorded kills to spark the run and Randolph walked away with the game-winner as IPFW improved to 3-2 on the year.
The Mastodons will return to action next Friday with a home match against conference foe Lindenwood at 7 p.m.
