FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodon men's soccer squad snapped a 10-match losing skid on Saturday afternoon, scoring a season-high three goals in topping the Eastern Illinois Panthers by a 3-1 score.
IPFW (1-10-1) got goals from Oscar Uyamadu, Corey Tom, and Stephen Danielian, as Jose Rodriguez, Drake Bowers, Corey Tom, and Austin Sibery each had an assist, as the Mastodons out-shot Eastern Illinois 24-10.
The Mastodons wasted little time, as IPFW struck first just 12:02 into the game when Rodriguez sent a pass through to the right side of the box to a waiting Uyamadu, who beat the Eastern Illinois (0-9-2) keeper far post for his fourth goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later, Jacob Murphy settled a rebound, and passed it to Tom in front of the goal, where the sophomore scored his first goal of the season - the eventual game-winner - to put the Mastodons ahead 2-0 with over 30 minutes to play in the first half.
The remaining 30-plus minutes went scoreless, as the Mastodons took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Just over two and a half minutes into the second half, the Panthers closed the gap in half when Garet Christianson put in a shot on a free kick.
After seeing their advantage cut in half, the Mastodons added an insurance goal when Sibery's shot attempt was saved by EIU goalkeeper Ben Feltes - one of his match-high eight saves - but found the foot of Stephen Danielian, who slid the shot into the back of the net, giving the match its 3-1 final score.
A year ago the Mastodons picked up their first win on October 13, before running off a stetch of winning four of six matches to close the regular season and earning a berth into the postseason tournament.
The Mastodons next travel to Indianapolis to take on the IUPUI Jaguars on October 19.
