FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In what started as a defensive battle through the first 80 minutes of the match, the IPFW Mastodons fell victim to a late flurry of goals, as the Western Illinois Leathernecks topped IPFW 3-0 on senior night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
IPFW out-shot Western Illinois 18-to-12 in the match; however, after seeing the first goal go in in the 80th minute, the Mastodons pressed for an equalizer, only to see the Leathernecks score with two and a half minutes left, and again with eight seconds remaining in the contest.
The Mastodons defended a strong Western Illinois attempt 15 minutes into the game when Raphael Kotzock was able to gather a header attempt off of a corner kick, to keep the match at 0-0. IPFW put its own strong run together in the 33rd minute when Western Illinois keeper Yves Dietrich made a diving stop for the save, as the teams went into the locker room knotted in a scoreless tie.
Kotzock made sliding stop on an attempt in the 64th minute to preserve the scoreless tie, before the Leathernecks ended the scoreless tie with 9:05 to play in the match when Erick Bloom took a pass from Diego Lopez off of a corner kick for what ended up being the game-winning score.
With the Mastodon offense pressing up, the Leathernecks added two more goals late, closing the 3-0 WIU win.
Jose Rodriguez had a team-best four shots in the loss, while Corey Tom had three - all on goal. Raphael Kotzock picked up four saves, while Dietrich had seven stops.
The Mastodons return to action on November 5 when the squad travels to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. kickoff in IPFW's final non-conference battle.
