FARGO, N.D. - Despite falling 3-1 to the North Dakota State Bison on Friday evening, the IPFW Mastodon women's soccer team still clinched a spot into the 2013 Summit League Tournament by virtue of a Western Illinois loss earlier in the day.
Freshman Gaby Romo scored IPFW's lone goal in the match, assisted by Andie Lazzerini, while goalkeeper Sam Pavlika, the defending Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, had six saves.
North Dakota State jumped out quickly, scoring first just under nine minutes into the match with a goal from Lauren Miller, her eighth score of the season.
The Mastodons answered back 17 minutes later when Lazzerini found Romo open with a short pass, where Romo found the back of the net on an open goal with 18-plus minutes remaining in the first half. The last 18-plus minutes remaining in the first half were scoreless, as the teams went into the locker room knotted at one apiece.
The Bison scored in the 56th minute and 68th minute of the second half, pushing ahead to a 3-1 lead, and neither team would score again, as NDSU held on for a 3-1 victory.
The North Dakota State win pushes the Bison ahead of the Mastodons in the battle for the third seed for the upcoming Summit League Tournament; however, an IPFW win on Sunday would once again push the 'Dons ahead of the Bison.
The Mastodons return to action for their regular season finale as the team travels to Brookings, S.D. to take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
