FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the end, the rally by the IPFW women's basketball team came up just short as the Mastodons fell to Indiana University in their home opener at the Gates Sports Center 85-80. Amanda Hyde led all players with 33 points including hitting a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line, tying a career-best. Hyde helped the 'Dons to a school record 24-for-24 from the charity stripe in the game.
Hyde also added in four assists and two steals. Freshman Rachel Rinehart upped her season-best mark with 18 points off the bench while Rebecca Bruner added in 12 points.
IU scored the opening two baskets of the game before Hyde got the 'Dons on the board as she sliced through the Hoosier defense for the lay in. Indiana though would open an eight point lead less than four minutes into the game. The 'Dons defense came up with several big stops as they held the Hoosiers without a field goal for over three minutes but were unable to cut into the lead.
Hyde and Stefanie Mauk had to head to the bench early for IPFW after picking up two quick fouls each. Rinehart came off the bench for the 'Dons and provided a spark as she bounced her inbounds pass off the Indiana defenders back and laid it in for an easy two points. Rinehart then hit a pair of free throws to pull the score to 25-16. Hyde responded as she converted on the and-one opportunity as she was fouled on the layup and connected on the ensuing free throw and then hit back-to-back jumpers cutting the Hoosier lead down to six. Rinehart then answered with a three, trimming to deficit to just three at 29-26.
The Hoosiers would push their lead back to seven but the Mastodons answered with a pair of free throws by Rinehart and a jumper by Rebecca Bruner to cut the lead back down to three. Ariana Simmons would hit a pair of free throws as the 'Dons would head into halftime trailing 43-38.
The two teams came out trading baskets before the Hoosiers ended the run on back-to-back buckets as the Mastodons trailed 54-44. Stefanie Mauk would answer for the 'Dons hitting a three from the right wing. IPFW would then cut the lead down to six on a pair of Hyde free throws.
IPFW would give it their all in the final eight minutes as Hyde would convert on another and-one as she hit the layup and the bonus and followed with another pair of free throws. Indiana would lead by 12 with 5:59 to play before Hyde would hit one from downtown. The Mastodons held the Hoosiers without a field goal from there, but Indiana would connect on 11 free throws.
Trailing 80-71, Rinehart would hit a three with just 52 second remaining and followed with a layup with 38 seconds left to pull the 'Dons to within four at 80-76. After the 'Dons fouled an Indiana player, the Hoosiers would be called for a technical foul as Hyde hit both free throws to cut the Hoosier lead down to two for the first time since 18:53 of the first half. But Indiana would hit four straight free throws to end the Mastodon rally and cement the game.
Rachel Mauk dished out four assists on the night while twin sister Stefanie Mauk led IPFW with five rebounds.
The two sides had nearly identical numbers from the floor as the 'Dons made 26-of-59 while the Hoosiers connected on 26-of-54. The difference came at the free throw line as the Hoosiers made 29-of-40 chances.
The previous free throw mark for the Mastodons connect all of their free throws was when they hit 19-of-19 at home against South Dakota State on January 28, 2012. Also, the 33 points by Hyde were the second most for a game in her career and her 14 free throws made rank 10th in IPFW single-game history.
IPFW kept their consecutive games with a 3-point field goal made in tack as it now reaches 436 games.
The 'Dons now head back out on the road for the final two games of the Preseason WNIT as they face Loyola-Chicago on Friday, November 15 at 8:30 p.m.
