CHICAGO - The road had not been kind to the IPFW women's basketball team as they dropped their third game away from the Gates Sports Center this season as the Mastodons fell to Mount St. Mary's 86-77 in their final game of the Preseason WNIT hosted by Loyola Chicago.
Amanda Hyde led IPFW (0-4 overall) with 19 points and three assists while also making two steals in the game. Freshman Ariana Simmons had her best game of her young career as she hit 7-of-12 from the floor to finish with 16 points and led IPFW with six rebounds and four steals. Haley Seibert also scored in double-digits as she finished with 15 points.
The 'Dons got off to a quick start to the game as they scored the opening bucket and then with it tied 5-5, score six unanswered points to take an 11-5 lead. The Mountaineers would slowly creep up on the Mastodons as they chipped away at the lead. Mount St. Mary's would tie the game on a pair of free throws with 8:18 to play in the half and then take the lead on their next possession at 26-23.
Later, trailing by four at 30-26 with 5:44 left in the half, IPFW would get a three from Mur Hagerman and a pair of free throws from Hyde to take a 31-30 lead. But that would be the final lead of the half for the 'Dons as The Mount scored seven unanswered points to retake the lead as they headed into halftime leading IPFW 40-36.
IPFW kept the score close in the second half as they responded to each mount St. Mary's basket early on. Down one at 51-50 with 11:52 to play, Haley Seibert gave the Mastodons their first lead since 4:54 of the first half on a layup, but the Mountaineers to answer right back with a bucket of their own. The 'Dons would later get a three by Ariana Simmons and then a layup from Hyde to retake the lead at 59-57 with 8:28 to play.
The two sides traded baskets as Mount St. Mary's hit a three and Rachel Rinehart added a free throw and the score was tied at 62 with 7:32 left.
With the 'Dons trailing 70-68, the Mountaineers would hit a pair of three's to push their lead to eight. The lead would be too much for IPFW and they were unable to make a rally late in the game.
IPFW shot better from the floor that Mount St. Mary's as the 'Dons hit 27-of-51 compared to 30-of-60 for the Mountaineers.
It was the first meeting between IPFW and Mount St. Mary's. It was also the first game for the Mastodons against any teams currently in the Northeast Conference.
The Mastodons return to the Gates Sports Center on Monday, November 18 for a 7 p.m. game against Southern Illinois.
