FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Ariana Simmons scored a career-high 22 points to lead the IPFW women's basketball team to a 96-71 win over SIUE in front of the home crowd at the Gates Sports Center. It's the fourth time this season the Mastodons have scored 90 or more points in a game.
The win was coach Chris Paul's 100th career victory at IPFW.
Simmons hit 6-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line, also leading IPFW with three blocks and three steals. Amanda Hyde scored 16 points while leading the Mastodons with five rebounds and also dishing out five assists.
Rebecca Bruner and Haley Seibert also scored in double figures for IPFW with 12 and 11 respectively. Siebert led all players with a game-high seven assists.
After SIUE scored the opening basket, the Mastodons would go on an 8-0 run in just over two minutes to take a lead they would never relinquish. IPFW continued to roll early, as they pushed the offensive pace, converting on several fast break opportunities. Simmons had an individual 8-0 run for the 'Dons as they led by 16 with 6:57 to play in the half.
IPFW would close out the half scoring six of the final eight points as they headed to the locker room with a 53-31 lead after the first 20 minutes - the second most points by IPFW in a first half this season.
The Cougars drew first blood in the second half, scoring the first four points, but just like the first half, IPFW would counter with an 11-0 run to push their lead to 30 points just over two and a half minutes in.
The Mastodons would lead by as many as 35 in the half as they cruised in the closing minutes.
The IPFW defense held the Cougars to just one 3-point field goal, a season-low for SIUE.
IPFW connected on 31-of-56 (55.4%) from the floor and hit a season-best 61.9% (13-of-21) from long range.
After a few days off, the Mastodons return to action on Saturday, December 21 when they travel to Detroit for a noon tip.
