FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite a 32-point outing from Amanda Hyde, the IPFW women's basketball team (7-7 overall) ended 2013 with an 83-75 loss to Ball State, snapping a three-game winning streak.
Hyde scored 30-plus points for the fifth time this season, hitting five three pointers and connecting on 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Hyde also led the Mastodons with game highs in rebounds (7), assists (5), and blocks (2). Ariana Simmons scored 14 points off the bench to go along with five rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals. Stefanie Mauk also scored in double figures for IPFW with 13 points and grabbing six rebounds.
Ball State jumped out to an early lead, opening the game on a 10-2 run. The Mastodons trailed by 15 points seven minutes in, and fought from behind for the majority of the first half. The 'Dons slowly began to cut into the Ball State lead, trailing by eight with 2:28 to go. IPFW closed the half on a 9-0 run and taking its first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by Rachel Rinehart with five seconds to play.
Leading 37-36, IPFW was unable to maintain the momentum coming out of halftime as the Cardinals started the second half on a 14-0 run, taking a 50-37 lead less than three minutes in.
The Mastodon offense would do their best to cut into the Ball State lead, as the hosts got the deficit to seven at 56-49 with 10:45 to go.
The Mastodon defense held Ball State without a point over a 3:26 stretch in the second half as the offense went on a 12-0 run, slashing the Cardinals lead to four with 3:36 left to play. Despite the defense holding the Cardinals without a field goal for the final 7:30 of the game, the 'Dons would be unable to get any closer in the loss.
For the night, the Mastodons shot 22-of-56 (39.3%) from the floor and 12-of-28 (42.9%) from long range. The 'Dons have now connected on 10-plus three pointers in five straight games, their longest stretch under head coach Chris Paul.
IPFW will have 11 days off before it returns to action, opening Summit League play at North Dakota State on January 9 for an 8 p.m. (EST) tip.
