FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team was defeated by Lindenwood on Friday night 3-1 (14-25, 28-26, 18-25, 25-27). The Mastodons are now 3-3 overall and 0-1 in MIVA competition.
IPFW recorded 35 errors on Friday night and hit on the negative side during two sets which led to Lindenwood picking up their first win of the season. The 'Dons served the ball very well against Lourdes last weekend, but that didn't carry over to tonight's game as IPFW had just one service ace to go along with 15 service errors.
Eddie Rivera led the 'Dons with 15 kills, seven digs, and four blocks. Freshman Andy Sellan also had a nice game ending the match with 12 kills and a team-high eight digs.
Omar Rivera had 36 assists for IPFW to go along with six digs and the duo of Ramon Burgos and Bryan Saunders chipped in offensively with eight and seven kills respectively.
The Lions used a team effort to record the win as they had four players with eight kills or more. Kyle Overby led the way with 10 and Colin Hackworth was close behind with nine.
Team blocks also had a large impact on the outcome as Lindenwood recorded 14 compared to just seven for IPFW. Scott Siwicki had six blocks for the Lions and Logan Jarus recorded five.
IPFW got out to a slow start in the opening set and therefore trailed 6-10 early in the contest. A five point run from Lindenwood would increase the lead to 20-11 as the Lions cruised to a 25-14 win in set one.
The Mastodons would tie the match at one set each by defeating the Lions 28-26 in set two. Two errors from Hackworth gave IPFW a 25-24 lead in crunch time. Overyby would tie the set at 25-25, but Andy Sellan came up with a key kill that once again gave IPFW a one point advantage. The game-winner came from Eddie Rivera after an attack error from Tim Schmidt.
The third set was a huge turning point in the match as IPFW squandered an 8-3 lead to get beat 18-25. After the solid start the game quickly got close and was tied up at 10-10. A 9-5 run would put Lindenwood in the driver's seat as they held on to take a 2-1 advantage with a 25-18 win.
The fourth and final set was a nail biter as the teams were tied up at 25-25 after a kill from Sellan. Jarus recorded a kill for the Lions that gave them a one point lead and an IPFW attack error ended the match as Lindenwood improves to 1-3 on the year.
IPFW will return to action tomorrow night as they host the Quincy Hawks at the Gates Sports Center at 7 p.m.
