FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's basketball team is now .500 in Summit League action (6-6) as the Mastodons defeated Kansas City on Thursday night by the final score of 49-42.
IPFW shot 25 percent from the floor and ended the game with 12 field goals, but stellar defense and all-around hustle led to the win as the Mastodons move up the Summit League standings.
Haley Seibert and Erin Murphy each scored 15 points to lead IPFW. Seibert hit three of IPFW's four 3-point field goals including a dagger from the corner with 2:51 to play. Murphy did her damage from the free throw line as she knocked down 7-of-8 from the stripe.
Amanda Hyde was also a key player on Thursday night as the junior poured in 13 points to go with six rebounds and two assists. Rachel Mauk rounded out the scoring total with six points. Mauk also grabbed six boards.
IPFW scored 11 points off Kansas City turnovers and didn't allow a single second chance point. The Kangaroo bench outscored IPFW 14-0, but IPFW held on to win the game by hitting 21 of their 24 free throw attempts.
IPFW held a small lead for a majority of the second half. The game was tied 19-19 at the half and the teams battled it out early in the second stanza. Momentum shifted towards IPFW with just under three minutes to play as Seibert pushed the Mastodon lead to seven by hitting a 3-point field goal in the corner.
Hailey Houser responded for Kansas City with an old fashioned three-point play on the very next possession. The Mastodons didn't slow down as Murphy came back to score a layup and then convert her own three-point play to push the lead back to seven.
Lexis Hardiek hit a 3-pointer late, but it wasn't enough as IPFW held off the Kangaroos for their sixth Summit League win of the year.
The Mastodons will return to action Saturday for the 6th Annual Pink Out Event. IPFW will host South Dakota at 2 p.m. at the Gates Sports Center. For additional information on the 2013 Pink Out Event click here.
