'Dons Sit Eighth After First Day of Summit Championships

DAY ONE RESULTS
VERMILLION, S.D. - After the first day of the 2013 Summit League Championships hosted by the South Dakota Coyotes, as the distance medley relay team took seventh in the field in the first of two days of the Championships.
IPFW's two points from the distance medley relay were the only event of the four from the opening day in which the Mastodons finished inside the top eight. North Dakota State is the first day leader with 41 points, while South Dakota (28), and Kansas City (23) rounding out the top three.
IPFW's DMR team consisted of Kayla Boyes, Emily Craig, Julie Jeszenszky, and Kaitlyn Simmons, and ran to a time of 12:48.96, a season-best by almost 45 seconds.
Junior Kaylin Taylor topped the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.37, placing 17th in the field, before sprinting to a time of 8.08 seconds, placing 13th in the field in the 60-meter dash.
In the weight throw, Kayla Zink narrowly missed qualified for the finals with a toss of 15.35 meters, the fourth-best toss in school history and less than half a meter from the ninth-place finisher which would have qualified her for the finals. Kaeleigh Porter placed a spot behind Zink in 12th with a career-best toss of 15.06 meters, which is the fifth-best toss in school history. Two others, Alyssa Kopp (19th/13.08 meters) and Rachel Dincoff (20th/12.81 meters) also competed for IPFW in the event.
The 800-meter dash saw Jeszenszky miss the finals in the event by less than a second and a half, placing 14th in a time of 2:22.97. Alexa Brown also ran in the event, placing 19th in a time of 2:37.92.
Andrea Bell placed 12th in the 3,000-meter run, chasing through the 15-lap race in a time of 10:22.15, less than three seconds away from 10th place.
In the one-day pentathlon, Brianna Whitehead took 10th with 2,243 total points in the five-event competition.
Emily Craig and Nichole Wormcastle each competed for IPFW in the 400-meter dash, placing 16th and 18th with times of 1:02.66 and 1:08.55, respectively.
The competition concludes tomorrow with the remaining finals at the 2013 Championships.
