INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The IPFW women's basketball team will face the IUPUI Jaguars on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the 2012-13 regular season. Action will tip-off at 5 p.m.
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
IUPUI is 18-10 overall with an 11-4 record in Summit League play. The Jaguars are in second place in the Summit League standings with one game to play during the regular season. IUPUI is on a two-game winning streak as they recorded wins over Kansas City and Oakland recently. Their last loss was at South Dakota on Feb. 21. The Jaguars have many impressive wins under their belt, but sweeping South Dakota State this season might be two of the best. The Jags won 57-56 at SDSU and then recorded a 70-67 win over the Jackrabbits in the Jungle.
DeAirra Goss and Kerah Nelson are two high impact players on the IUPUI roster. Goss is the leading scorer on the team at 12.2 per game and Nelson is right behind her at 12.0. Nelson was sidelined with an injury the first time IPFW and IUPUI met back in December.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The all-time series between IPFW and IUPUI is tied at 11-11. The Jaguars pulled within one game of the all-time series after beating IPFW 76-62 in the last meeting of the 2011-12 season. That series ended in a split however as the Mastodons defeated IUPUI 59-50 at the Gates Sports Center in the first meeting.
The first ever meeting between these two programs was played during the 1979-80 season. The Mastodons lost at home by the final score of 52-60. The 'Dons have had recent success under head coach Chris Paul when playing IUPUI. The teams split the series in 2008-09, but IPFW swept IUPUI during both the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
LAST TIME OUT
IPFW lost at Western Illinois on Thursday night by the final score of 73-54. The Mastodons are now 12-15 overall and 8-7 in the Summit League with one game remaining in the regular season.
The Mastodons got off to a slow start and found themselves down 6-0 early in the opening half. That lead turned into a 38-24 advantage at halftime and the Leathernecks maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.
Stefanie Mauk led IPFW in scoring with 16 points. She shot 6-of-15 from the field, which included knocking down three shots from behind the arc. Amanda Hyde was the only other Mastodon to score in double figures. She added 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
3-point shooting has been a major factor in IPFW's recent winning streak, but Western Illinois came out on top in that category tonight hitting 11 of their 24 attempts (45%). Saule Kontautaite hit five 3-point field goals and Michelle Maher was close behind with four. Maher ended the game with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a block. Kontautaite scored a game-high 17 points, leading WIU to victory.
1,000 POINT WATCH
Amanda Hyde now has 959 career points as a Mastodon. She has put together a great season by doubling her points per game average from a year ago (18.9 2012-13 / 9.5 2011-12). Hyde is leading the Summit League in scoring which has not been done by an IPFW player since the 2007-08 season when Johnna Lewis-Carlisle averaged 19.5 ppg.
IPFW VS IUPUI GAME RECAP – DEC. 28
IPFW held a 46-39 lead at the half, but poor shooting during the final 20 minutes of the game turned out to be the difference as IUPUI knocked off IPFW by the final score of 79-74.
Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 30 points for the Mastodons. She was 8-for-13 from the floor with a pair of 3-point field goals. Hyde also hurt IUPUI from the charity stripe as she went 12-for-15 from the foul line.
Erin Murphy played well offensively for IPFW on Friday night. The junior ended the game with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. IPFW shot 62 percent from the floor in the opening half, but that percentage dropped to just 30 percent during the final twenty minutes. The 3-point shooting was also off as IPFW was just 1-for-12 from distance down the stretch.
Katie Comello was in the zone for IUPUI on the offensive end. Comello scored 20 of her 29 points in the first half. She locked in defensively as well leading the Jaguars with six steals. DeAirra Goss added 18 points, and Jordan Barton came off the bench to record a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
SUMMIT LEAGUE LEADER
Junior Amanda Hyde leads the Summit League and is 27th in the nation with a scoring average of 18.9 points per game. She most recently scored 12 points at Western Illinois.
3-POINT SHOOTING
The Mastodons average seven 3-point field goals per game. That average is the second-best in the Summit League, and is 27th best in the NCAA. Western Illinois leads the Summit League with 7.5 made 3-point field goals per game, and Creighton is the top team in the country at 9.5.
FREEBIES
Amanda Hyde is shooting 86.8 percent from the free throw line this season making her the second best free throw shooter in the Summit League. The junior has made 138 of her 159 attempts on the season. She currently holds the 17th best percentage in the NCAA.
