Mastodons Lose 82-67 in Regular Season Finale

INDIANAPOLIS – The IPFW women's basketball team lost to IUPUI in the 2012-13 regular season finale 82-67. The Mastodons erased a 16 point first half deficit and cut the lead to one possession with 7:41 to play, but the Jaguars held on for their 19th win of the season.
IPFW ends the regular season with an overall record of 12-16 which includes an 8-8 mark in the Summit League. The Mastodons will be the No. 4 seed in the Summit League Tournament that will begin next weekend.
The IPFW starting five produced all 67 points for the Mastodons on Saturday afternoon. Haley Seibert led the way with a game-high 19 points and Erin Murphy connected on nine free throws to net 15 points.
Amanda Hyde scored 14 points and added three assists and Stefanie Mauk reached double figures with 10 points for the 'Dons. Rachel Mauk was close to double figures as she ended the day with nine points.
IPFW had a tough time slowing down Kerah Nelson on senior day as Nelson scored a game-high 29 points on 13-of-14 shooting to go along with 11 boards. The inside presence of Nevena Markovic also hurt the 'Dons as she chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. DeAirra Goss was the third player to reach double figures. She scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
IUPUI outscored IPFW 60-20 in the paint and the Jaguars also tacked on 18 second chance points. IPFW never led in the game as Jags grabbed a 4-0 lead to start the game and never looked back.
IPFW trailed IUPUI 9-5 at the first media timeout, but the Jaguars went on a run that gave them a 20-6 advantage with 11:49 to play in the opening half. The Mastodons chipped away at the lead by hitting five 3-point field goals. Seibert knocked down three of the five as she kept IPFW alive in the first half with 15 points.
IUPUI got the ball inside to hurt IPFW in the first 20 minutes of action. The Jaguars outscored IPFW in the paint 32-6 in the first half and senior Kerah Nelson was a big part of the total. Nelson scored 12 of her 14 first half points in the paint while adding a jumper from the corner.
A 3-point field goal from Hyde got IPFW within five points late in the first half, but Nelson came up with back-to-back field goals to give the Jags a 10 point cushion at the break. IUPUI maintained a 10 point lead at the second media timeout in the second half, but IPFW got within three (60-57) with 7:41 to play.
Goss added free throws and the combo of Nelson and Markovic got the lead back to double digits where it would stay until the final buzzer.
