
'Dons Smash Two Records at Outdoor Opener

TAMPA, Fla. - Behind big school records from Theresa McHugh in the javelin and Rachel Dincoff in the shot put, as the Mastodons opened the 2013 outdoor season at the University of South Florida Bulls Invitational.
McHugh picked up the team's first school record in the javelin with a toss of 43.54 meters (142-feet, 10-inches), which breaks the previous school record, also held by McHugh, as the previous record was 141-1. In addition to the record, McHugh places second in the strong field that includes competitors from South Florida, Florida State, Rutgers, Marshall, and Michigan. Alssa Kopp also competed for the Mastodons in the event, as the busy Kopp, who also competed in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put, took 15th with a toss of 28.10 meters (92-2), becoming the ninth-best thrower in school history.
In the shot put, Dincoff's toss of 14.46 meters (47-5.25) brooke the school record held by teammate Kayla Zink by nearly six feet, placing second in the strong field. Zink followed with the fourth-longest throw in school history with a toss of 12.41 meters (40-8.75), placing 11th. Kaeleigh Porter (11.73 meters / 38-6) placed 13th, Emily Radke (10.99 / 36-0.75) 16th, Lizzy Frazze (10.94 / 35-10.75) 17th, and Alyssa Kopp (9.51 / 31-2.5) 20th.
Kaylin Taylor nearly added her name to the record book in a pair of events in the meet, as she sprinted to a time of 12.78 in the 100-meter dash, the fourth-fastest time in school history, while her time of 26.14 in the 200-meter dash is a personal best, and the third-fastest such time in school history. Emily Craig set a personal-best in a pair of events, the 200 (28.20) and the 400 (1:02.80), the latter of which is the ninth-fastest time in program history.
Dincoff, in addition to his school record in the shot put, put together the third-best throw in school history in the discus, tossing the implement 42.61 meters (139-9), placing sixth in the field. Frazze took 14th witha toss of 27.43 meters (90-0), Emily Radke 15th 15th (22.97 meters / 75-4), and Kopp 16th (22.72 / 74-6).
Senior Katy Moore placed 17th in the high jump when she cleared 5-2.25 (1.58 meters), tied for the seventh-highest clearance in school history.
In the hammer throw, Porter led the Mastodons with a ninth-place finish with a toss of 45.46 meters (149-2), becoming the second-best hammer thrower in school history. Dincoff climbed to sixth on the all-time hammer throw list with a toss of 37.62 (123-5), placing 11th, with Zink finishing a spot behind witha toss of 37.34 meters (122-6). Radke placed 13th with a toss of 33.78 meters (110-10), Frazze 15th in 28.32 meters (92-11), and Kopp 16th in 23.68 meters (77-8)
In their first-ever 3,000-meter steeple chase, freshmen Kaitlyn Simmons took third in a time of 11:59.03, and Andrea Bell placed fourth in a time of 12:19.12. In the open 3,000, Simmons took sixth in a time of 10:33.91, with Rachel Zachar placing 12th in a time of 11:05.08. Amaya Ayers (16th/11:20.42), Rebecca Jacobs (18th/11:25.50), and Jordan Tomecek (19th/11:38.80) also competed for the 'Dons in the event.
Zachar placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run for the Mastodons in a time of 18:58.48, while Jacobs took 10th in a time of 19:35.87. Ayers and Tomecek placed 12th and 14th in times of 19:54.69 and 20:04.71, respectively.
The Mastodons put the same quartet of runners in both the 1,500-meter and 800-meter runs. Alexis Minier led the four in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:33, with Nichole Wormcastle running a time of 5:33.84, Alexa Brown 5:59.68, and Nicole Dailey 6:01.55. In the 800-meter run, Wormcastle led the four in the two-lap race with a time of 2:47.35, whie Dailey ran to a time of 2:51.31. Minier (2:56.05) and Brown (3:01.00) rounded out the Mastodon competitors in the event.
After a weekend off, the Mastodons are set to compete in the Toledo Collegiate Challenge on March 29 and 30 in Toledo, Ohio.
